THE COMPETITIONS

EIGHTH DAY . KIDDIES IN CHARACTER AND KILTS Another interesting day was recorded at the Competitions in the Town Hull yesterday. During tlie morning, in tho larger hall, there was. a piano section for advaneeo: students; contraltos exercised, their talent in Hullah's familiar old ballad "Threo Fishers," and basses or baritones wero left to "select their own numbers. which they did with curious variation of ideas. In the afternoon some twenty-five small children occupied the attention of the judge (Mr. John Hopkins) with character recitations, and na the little ones impersonated .book blacks, eoblins, Prince Arthurs, . Mrs. Caudles, and orphan boys, the aistant drone of the bagpipes denoted that Scottish dancing was in full'fling in tho Con- ■ cert Chamber upstairs. On Thursday ono of tho men present at the Scottish dancing expressed in vehement terms his opinion that the judges did not know their business, but as differenMS of opin- _ ion make the Competitions interesting, • * tlio untoward interruption was not taken very seriously- Many, for instance, disagreed with the judge in the character recitation for children. . A correction should be made, respecting the announcemant of the result of; the combined ballet. There are competitors other than those who appeared on Thursday evening, so that tho final judgment cannot be given until the others have appeared. THE RESULTS. In a character recitation, "Aunty Doleful,'" Miss Eva Clay, Lyall * Bay, caused niuoh merriment with her lugubrious consolations to an..unfortunate, nieco, who "needed cheering up a little." Miss Betty Menard,' Wellington, mado a somowhat clever nnd aptly cantankerous "Mrs. Caudle," and earned a full meed of applause. Tho judge's decision, however, went to Mies' Stella Chapman (Christchurch), who produced "Queen Mob" In tho Irish song class for ladies, Miss M. If. 8.. Jones (Wellington) gave much pleasure with lier . . mezzo-soprano rendition of "Kathleen Mavonrneeh." Tlie'same fong was given by Miss. Corrio Aslin (Dunedin), who ' earned a full round of applause, and •by ; Mrs. Edward Cameron (Dunedin),! who also secured popular approval. As 1 "Uriah Heep" Air. Lionel Inch (Wei- 1 l.ington) did well in the Dickens char- | acter sketch. Mr. Charles F. Burnett ' (Auckland) took tlio part of "Sam Wei- \ ler," but, although ho started well, lie : lost tho requisite Cockney twany and ! sense of. humour towards tho' finish of his sketch, and this somowhat spoilt j the genoriil effect of his work. "Miss Mowclier" was choson by Miss Fanny Kutner' (Wellington), and her volatile interpretation brought down tho houso. Mr. W. Man- . ning (Wellington), who possesses a good baritone voice,' sang "Friend of Mine" very tastefully, Miss 0. M. Ormiston (Whangarei), who has an attractive , mezzo-soprano voice, earned liberal ap- , plauso with her rendering of the "Jewel Song" .fToni "Faust" in- the operatio solo class. "I'm j Alone" ("Lily of'Killarney"; was sung admirably by Miss M. H. B, Jones, and she easily gained the verdict of tho audience. Mrs. R. J.
