CONTKOTJiETC-GENKRAL AND CHIEF INSPECTOR APPOINTED. I Rar To!eirr«.tih-PrM« A«»ocl»Ho«. "^ Christchurch, November 13. Mr. C. E. Matthews has been appointed Cnntreller-Genoral of Prisons, and Mr. M. Hiiwkins has been promoted Chief Insuector.
Tho appointments referred to above aro the result of tlw Prisons Amendment Act passed last eession. In explaining tho change, the Minister said that in future tho Prisons Department was to bo run on tho same lines as the Health DeDartmeut; tho administration of tho Denartmeiit was to bo handed over to the O^ntrollw-Gcne-nil— formerly tho Inspector of Prisons—to whom tho various insnectors of wisons—new appointmentswould be responsible. Tho ControllerGeneral, it was explained, would bo .roBUonsible to the Minister of Justice in the same way as tho Inspector-General of Hosnitnls was responsible to the Minister of Public Health. Tho Amending Act nrovided that tho then Inspector of Prisons should' become Controller-Gen-eral, mid tho Deputy-Inspector of Prisons an InsDcetor of Prisons.
