SCOTTISH NATIONAL DANCERS
Yesterday saw a slight change in die vcniiß lit the coinpftiiioii.s in the Town Hnli. On the musical side only three short- H'ctiens were, set down tor Ihe morning, and i" the afternoon the judge of music ami .singing (Mr. Harold (tregson) was given a full afternoon off, which ho ihorouglily deserved. In plan l of t'ho usual musical items, the Concert Chamber was given over lo national dancing competitions, and the squeal of the pi'pps wiis loud in the hull. Natiuiinl (lancing is not likely to die out in Wellington. There are evidently competent teachers and no lack of pupils in Wellington, for the entries in some, of tiiu .Scutch dance sections were so numerous that they )i«d to l>o divided into I wo. There were forty entries in llio small children's Highland fling section; seventeen entered for tltt- sword dance, and twenty for the Irish jig. In the absence of Mr. Mackenzie iforlies, of Wsin»aiini, Mr. W. Kilgour, of Teimikii. and .Air. Fuller, of Wellington, acted as judges of dancing. Mr. W. Gordon Brown was the official piper. Again Miss Helen Hard'net' acted as jutlga of •the fancy dancing.

Last pvening's concert opened with the nmnsiiiß children's plav "The Sewing Soeiely," in which half a dozen little girls were concerned. Jn the finnl of the sacred solo competition for tenors, Mr. J'. P. Dodds, of Dannevirke, samr "How Many of Thy Hired Servants," Mr. Harry Lobb, of Wellington, gan? "Then Shall the Righteous," and Mr. MontaKiielGMlmorP. of Khandallah, Piing "The Sorrows of Death." Of these the mcist impressive contribution was that of Mr. I>'ld.s, whose 'lumber, from Melml's 'The Prodigal Son." was delivered with, lino security of tone and . admirable. expression. "Bobolink' was the poem selected for t'ii> lndy elocutionists. Of tho exponents of this quaint poem Miss Mabel Gallichan, of Wellington, put in some delightful tone colouring in imitation of the eiirioiiti bird. Miss Fanny Kntncr and Miss Bessie Thomson also gave interesting interpretations uf the same poem. In the character dance (from 12 to Iβ year.-) there wore four left lo fight nut Ihe finish Miss Ira Inglcsby appeared as Miss "U.5.A.," and danced on original incisure to Hie lilt of "Yankee Doodle." Miss Roina Bitovi, in T)nteh attirn, clattered round rhythmically in stout wowleii clogs. Mis;* Emily Turner, of Christchureh, in mule evening dress, proved a lively exponent of the double and single, shuffle, ami put plenty of villi into her work, and Miss Tbelina M'Kenzie, entering a- la Garni ?n, danced a gay fandniißO to the. pitter-patter of tho enstenets, ond won perhaps the most irenero-iis approbation of the andienee.
