MEAT PRICES IN ENGLAND
■AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT. London, November 9. Mr. C. A. M'Cimly, Parliamentary Secretary to the J'Wl Ministry, replying It the Meat Importers' request for the n.'movnl of restrictions, raid that if the central were removed there would probably be n temporary fall in the prieo of imported meat, owing to ihe heavy stocks arriving; while aiupie >--iipylics of home-grown were available. ■ It-was not in the interest of the British. consumer to snatch ab a purely temporary reduction. What was required was to assure ptesent and future supplies at the lowest reasonable level. Mr. ll'C'urdy admits that the world's prospective exportable si.rplus is 1,150,000 tons, 'but if the tostrictions en'consumption were removed Britain would require 1,140,000 tons instead of 750,000 tons next year. The Continent's minimum requirements were half a million tons. Therefore there was no normal surplus of meat. The removal of' control would involve the risk of higher prices in al! the markets of tho world.—Ans.-N.Z. Cablo Assn. GENERAL KASTNCi-DOWN PEEDICTED. London, November 9.
