They cover food, rent, fuel and light. The following figures, laken from the StatisMcian'e tables, show the index numbers for the six monlhlv periods and the percentage increase over Oho figures for the six months ended June, 1911:— Six months Index Percentage ending number, increase. This increase in food prices is' due to increases in prices of groceries and meat, which have been counteracted to some, extent by seasonal fall in prices of dairy produce. The iudex number for the groceries group has been forced up by rising prices for a number of articles. Mio most important of which are potatoes, onions, soap, and tinned foods. The increase in. prices of potatoes and onions is a seasonal movement; retail prices of soap are still moving up in I'esponso to the advance in wholesale prices; prices of tinned foods Jiave lieen increased as a result! of increases in. packers' prices and the continued adverse condition of the American exchange.
