TERRACE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH ANNIVERSARY

The seventy-fifth Anniversary services of tliii Terrace Congregational Church Sunday School were concluaed yesterday evening when a public tea was_ held; followed bv a meeting in the church. There was a very good attendance, and the uroceedings were most enthusiastic. Mr. I''. Meadowcrofr, superintendent and treasurer, delivered an interesting address on the history of the Suu-ciay School. Regular • Sunday school, he said, was commenced in 1844 under the superintendence of the late Mr. Woodward, assisted by Mr. John Tomlinson. In 1819 Sir Joseph Bird became superintendent, and held the position for twentynine years till 1878. Seventy-four scholars were then on the roll. Sir Joseph Biro' was succeeded by Uie.Rev. W. J. Ha bens: who held office for three and a half years till May 11, 1882. Mr. John Knowles. who had been acting as deputysuperintendent when official duties called Mr. Habeas out of Wellington, took full charge for eight months, till Sir j Joseph G. Holdsworth, a former teacher, was invited to take the superintendency, but on account of other duties he was unable to Rive the necessary time, lie, however, took office for three months, when the pastor, Dr. West, took up tho duties for six months, till October 15, ISS3. when Mr. W. West Knowles was elected superintendent. He helo' the position -for two years until his father, Mr. J. Knowles, having' returned from England. took up office' again, and hold it for nearly three years, when failing health necessitated his resignation, which was tendered on July 9, 188 S. Tho numbers had fallen then to 57. Mr. AY. 6. Hagget then became superintendent for nearly three years, till October, 1891, when Mr. J. C. Webb undertook tho siinerintemleney till May, 1893. The attendance at this time was eighty-one. The nnstor. the Rev. 0. J. Allen, then took charge for five months, till the present' superintendent, the speaker, was electee on October 4, 1893-twenty-six years a"o. For fiflv-fivc years past this school had had only eight superintendents, who with one execution had been deacons of the church. At present there are eleven teachers and 82 scholars. Election of officers resulted as follows: —Suiieriutendent and treasurer, Mr. F. Meadowcroft: deputy-superintendent, Mr. W Mill; secre'aries, Misses Margaret M'Tlie and Mona M'Kje; librarians, Messrs. James aim Eggei-s; delegate, to Central Union. Miss May.
