' • At the meeting of tho Wanganui Harbour Board last .week one speaker took exception to tho charge for overhauling tho board's dredge at Wellington. The chairman, in reply, stated that the Kaione hn<l been laid up for nearly four years.. The machinery on deck had rusted and needed overhauling. AIT the other machinery had to be taken uown for inspection. Then one or two new jobs had to bo..done, such-as extra seacocks, which ••vcro expensive matters. Tho ship had to bo surveyed and its machinery impeded as if it had just come off the stocks. Ho considered that the board had got its money's worth, although he waß not so satisfied about the painting. Ho added that the Gisboruc dredge overhauled at Auckland cost very considerably more 'than the Kaionc's overhaul, although the latter had steamed nearly 16,0:)0 milos. One speaker predicted that the. board would get lots of chocks from the Kaione before they.had finished with it. CARPENTARIA SLAVES NEW YORK. According to aUrcss Ansociation message from New York the Carpentaria, which was loading under the auspicea of the (A. and A. Line, left there on Saturday last. A Press. Association message from Duncoin states that o;ving lo the c»nge, ilion of. work at Port Chalmers the Navue/s reconditioning and overhaul cannot be completed in time to enable her to enter the Island service this month. The. chairman said lie had been informed that she had been filled up to tho combings in 14 minutes. Tho difficulty at pre-sf-nt was the manncuvering.of tho shin in shallow waters between tho tides. The vessel drew 124 ft. -.vhen fully loaded. Tho installation of 'wireless plants on sailing vessels has greatly improved thorn as freight-carriors. Previously morcriaat* were unablo to import cargo from overseas in thesa vessels with any degree of certainty regarding thn date of delivery, but as messages can now ho sent at reir.i'.fir intorvnls on the voyage stating whether ships' are becalmed or making good 'progress; the arrival time can now bo anticipated soine tine beforehand. Tho Chateau D'lf, -which.arrived.at Molbourne ra the morning 'Of OctoberM from Dunkirk, was' in touch with Melbourne radio station a week previously. Other French sailers were similarly reported before arrival, as was the Commonwealth baraue Shandon on her (last Toyage from Chile to .Melbourne. Since the .Union Company's steamer Manuka entered the ferry service relieving the Maori, which ■is under overhaul at' Port Chalmers, she has thoroughly tented the latent capabilities of a few of the company's'smart steaming vessolß, says a Ohristchurch .paper. Tho. opportunities for a race are of no Taro occurrence that when Buch an event takes place it arouscß no end of enthusiasm, not only amongst the crews of the vessels concerned, but amongst the watersiders at either port. During tho past month the Manuka, and Maheno wore. the contestants in a race from Lyttelton to .Wellington, the former beating her opponent by something like 'an hour, at the Bame time establishing a new record for herself. On Saturday night! the Manuka 'tackled a still more formidable i rival in tho Moerakl,- and , again creditably maintained her reputation as a fast and consistent steamer. She 16ft Lyttelton. exactly at 8.35 p.m. and the Moeraki three minutes later. The Manuka arrived at. Wellington at 8 a.m., and tho Moeraki at 8.10 a.m., the Manuka thus getting the verdict by. seven minutes.
