THANES FOR AID

RAILWAY MANAGER TO BUSINESS MEN. The chairman of the Wellington Railway Goods Transit Committee has received the following letter from Mr. R. W. M'Villy, General Manager of Railways:— "I desire to tender to yourself, as chairman, and to the members of your committee, the thanks of thfi Railway Department for the valuable assistance rendered "to thu Department during the recout coal crisis in the direction of ensuring the carriage of the maximum quantity of goods of an essential and urgent character. Tho success of tho arrangements miido for meeting what was unquestionably a very serious position was largely duo to the'energy with which the individual members of your committee entered upon their self-imposed duties, and to their loyal and wholehearted co-operation and support to the officers of the Department under tho most difficult circumstances. The service rendered by your members in limiting and selecting consignments for transport would, in view ut tho whole conditions, have.been difficult, if not impossible, for railway officers themselves to have undertaken without incurring a great deal of opposition and ndverso criticism. It is a matter of congratulation that tho business community generally accepted with such good spirit the unavoidable inconveniences to which they were unfortunately subjected at tins time, and I recognise luliy that this result was mainly duo to the skill and tact which tho committee brought to bear upon its task. "May I ask you to convey the thanks of the Department to the individual members of your committee, and to express my appreciation of the way in which they devoted their valuable time to their voluntary duties?"
