NEW ZEALAND CUP MEETING

1 A VICTORY FOR VAGABOND INAH WINS STEWARDS' HANDICAP WELCOME STAKES TO MOORFOWL By Telegraph-Special Correspondent. Christchurch, November 8. As wa3 anticipated the crowd at Riccarton to-day proved all too big, and during the afternoon some thousands of pounds were shut out of the machine. The events got behind time, and tho last race was run forty-five minutes after the advertised: time of starling. The weather was perfect and the going good. The totalizator ha.no.led compared with .&18.02G 10s. on tht snmo day last year. The running of Gay Lad in'the Cup was inquired into, but no action was taken. Biorneborg was inken out of the Hurdles, leaving six runuers. The top-weight carried nearly' ,£2OOO on tho machine, while- Hrliuis also had over four figures. Jack Svmons and Austin led for a mile, when ICohu took charge. Shortly afterwards the favourite ran up to him, and wis first into the straight. Hylans ioined him at the last fence, but jumped badly, and the favourite ran in an easy winner. • Hylnns just beat Kohu, and then came Jack gymons. Sonnino jumped very badly. There was heavy speculation on tho Spring Mate, • several of the runners being well supported. Bonetter was the n«tuni favourite, but a, bad passage spoilt her chance. Rose Wreath was first awav. but she was pulled in behind, and Motuihi led Bonnie Heather, Braid, Seasprite, an« Fleotham into the straight, with Rose Wreath handy. Bonnie Heather took charge two furlongs from home, but Rose Wreath soon joined him, and the pair fought out a gruelling finish, victory going to the filly by a head. Bonelter came from a long way back and cot third place, and- was followed by Nishtraider, Motuihi, and Royal Exchange* Some Kid was a good favourite for tne Linwood ■ Handicap, Early Dawn being ; pecono: choice. After Balefire had broken | the tunes a coupio of limes a fair start' was effected. Early Dnwn eoon look charge, and led Eight Bolls and Flight Commander into the straight. Hie leader maintained her position, and won well by a couple of lengths from Eight Bells. Bombproof finished fast in third place, arid tlien came Plight Commander, Starlike. and Prodigal. Tho biir event was next, antf Volo, who was withdrawn at noon, wns tho only defection when the field came into tho birdcage. All eyes were trimmed for Gav Lad. but he was not produced until the field was ready to go out. He looked very well, and is a stylish thoroughbred, but he seemed a trifle on the big siflo. Of (he others, Kilmoon appeared not readv. and was a trifle sore. Mascot, Vagabond, Nobleman, and Kilnish were all that could be desired on the score of condition. Heathercote was fretting a bit, and Rose Pink was sore. There was a very big pool on the machine, with Gay Lad favourite, Vagabond. Nobleman, and Kilrtish also carrying big money. The start was a good one. all but Sweet Tipperary going off well. Bv the time the stantf was readied Binsham was showing the way from Eleus. Kilmoon. and Starland, with tho favourite one? in the rear. Down the back the favourite was getting a bad run. and was pushed back to last place, with Vacabond. Sfa-icot, end Heathercote just in front of him. At the seven furloiurs, BiiiKham and Eleus were in charge with Kilmoon, Kilrugh, and Nobleman handv. anil the others well up. Rouudine the boncV, Vagabond moved up. us did the favourite. Battle Song took chareo at the half-mile, and he led into the straight, where the favourite came fast, and took second place alongside of Kilnish. <U tho distance Vagabond headed the favourite, and he came on, and won most ronifortohly from Baitlp Sonsr, who was ridden right out to beat Heathercote mid Mascot, who finished together with the latter going very fast. Kilnish was next, then came the favourite, and Eleus, with the others finishinz at intervals. The fnvonnt* pulled up remarkably veil, and better handled he would have been closer up, but. it. is hard to see how ho would have beaten Vacabond, who won with ease, and was eased up several lengths from the post. The winner is ownetf by Mr. IC. S. Williams, in whose colours he has won ecveral good handicaps. He was ridden a perfect race by B. Deelcy, and his condition reflected great credit on his trainer. J. H. Jefferd. Tho Welcome Stakes was next. La Paix and Saima were' the withdrawale, and speculation was confined to the Clifford: bracket, with Humbug second choice. They ran'in the positions indicated on the machine, but supporters of tho favourite were fortunate, as Humbus got badly left, and then met with interference, eventually being beaten by a le-mrth. Moorfowl was early in charge, and she led throughout. Over the last furlong the Gisborne-owncd horse fairly flew, but the favourite .held her advantage to the post. Right and Left was a neck way, and then came Winter Wind and Fabrinade. There was a big fieltf in the Appentices' Handicap," and Steepholm was made favourite, with Sans Souci also well backed. Eimont Park took charge when the barrier went, up, and led all the way. Arch Salute and Barley Rigs were always prominent, and they filled the places, with the favourite-fourth. All started in the Stewards' Handicap, the betting beiig of a wide order, but Onslaught was always favourite. After a false start the field , got off on even terms Inah scon took charge, and led all tho way. Silver Link and Onslaught were next to the leader as they came on to the course proper, but at no etaw did thov look like catching the main, who won easily bv a length, while Onslaught beat Silver Link by a neck. -Then came Croesus. Kipling, and Cerberus. Loval .Arch and Dribble forfeited their engagements i» the Riccarton AVolter Handicap. First Salute was made a cood favourite. Biirrangong showed in front for half a furlong, when Killowen took charge, and letf Royal Stag and tho favourite into the straight. Royal Star took chnnre' at' the distance, and won comfortably from Roynl Stag, who bent the favourite by a head. DETAILED RESULTS. Rj Telecranh—l'rosa Association. SPRING HURDLES, of 300 sots.
