COMPETITIONS

MUSIC, SONG AND STORY

- SOME GOOD CLASSES

.The, Wellington Competitions Society's festival' was continued at tho Town Hall and Concert Chamber yesterday and last evening, before encouraging large audiences, which manifested a lively interest in the proceedings. The classes taken .during the day were most interesting. One of the best was the song and accompaniment (a dual competition in which then performance of the accompaniment was jjidged with, the style, quality, and methods of' the, singer). This class attracted a large entry, and produced some good talent. In tho afternoon the humor- ■ ous'recitation .for ladies, and the.barefoot, dancing for lit,tle girls,-sustained the interest admirably. In tho recital (with musical accompaniment) the performers ' generally selected hardy annuals rather, than venturing into fresh poetic pastures. Tho results were as follow :-- ■Becitel, with musical accompaniment, patnetic or dramatic (lady or gentleman 16 and under 21, own selection). Recalls-Miss Fanny Kutiier (Wellington) Mr. h. H. J. THE EVENING PERFORMANCE. Although the management, announced the previous evening that the. entertainment would commence at 7.45 p.m. sharp, it was after 8 p.m. when the curtain rose last evoning on tho children's play "Japanese Curios," in which Joyce Whitehead,' Maria Davidson, Betty M.'Kenzie, and Masters Maxwell Bosher .' played about prettily in Japanese costumes. "The Bells of Twilight" (song for girls).came up. for final adjudication. In'this contest Miss Nellie Amies' tlis- ..; played a mezzo voice of uncommonly .good quality, and sang the charming gong with rare intelligence. Miss Dulcie,""Philpott infused brightness and a gladdening charm into her interpretation, and Miss Ira Wolfgang also fang with girlish sweetness. Hiss Fanny Kutner gave a raw-boned Cockney sketch entitled "In Fifteen Parts," with a sharp acid touch which rather worked against -the natural humour of the sketch. Mr. Howard .Moody, seated at the piano, recited "Tho Mystery of the Midnight Moon" glibly, and Miss Bessie Thomson (Dunedin) recited "Billy" with a delicacy and insinuating humour quite charming.. Tn the vocal solo (with accompaniment) Miss M. H. B. Jones King "It Was a Dream" with much tonal charm. Miss Jones possesses a cultivated saprano voice of extended range and bright musical texture, and should bo heard of in the . future. ■• Miss Corrie Aslin, another sweet singer from Dunedin. selected the florid song "Sing, Sweet Bird," and sang it well. There was a suspicion of hardness in her top notes, but her trill and her vocal agility generally reflected good training. Mrs; Edward Cameron, a., mezzo from, Dunedin. gave a dost acceptable rendering of "Vorrei,"

realising fully the romance of the .-Miss Fanny.' Kutner recited "Alxm Ben "*' Adham" vitally enough, but with a theatrical touch . that was" scarcely called for. Miss DruTy Turner, <)f Christchurch, and Mis* Bessie Thomson, of'Dunedin, also recited the same piece, the latter with illuminating intelligence. Miss Roma Bitos-ji and Miss Thelma M'Kenzie, in classical neglige, danced a measure as the fauns of Pan might have in the golden age. Miss Monn Castle sang "Annie La-uric," exhibiting a mezzo voico which showed sensible improvement, since the last competition'-. Nice feeling and finish weie exhibited hv Miss Corrie Aslin in "Angus Macdonald." The same song was selected by Mrs. Edward Cameron, ■who also s.ing the number with good expression. "The Angel" (Mary CoburneVeel) was recited by Mrs. Forsyth (Mast*rton), Mies Fannv Kutner, and Miss •■■'"Bessie Thomson. The honours lay with the last-named, whose dramatic intuition well under control, and low-toned, husky voice make a sure appeal. Mr. Leigh Dew sang Alfred Hill's wng "Home Little Maori Heme." Mr. A. Mottcrshead tho same com poser's "My Fairest CM'd." and Mr. C. "Ri.-hworfh "Wniat-i. Pm," also by Mr. Hill. Mr*. W. J, Forsyth Wnsterton), Miss Mabel Gnllichan, nnd Miss Bessie.
