-9 APPOINTED COMMISSIONER OP SAMOA. It was announced by tho Minister of Defence (Sir James Allen) yesterday that, Colonjl Uobert Ward Tate hud been oll'ercd and had accepted the position of Civil Administrator of Samo-.i, Prior to the war Colonel Tato was a solicitor practising ill Grovtown and CarterMn. in the Wairarapa, with a good record for work in the volunteer forces. After joining up, he was appointed to Die staff, and later succeeded Colonel I'ilkingten as Adjutant-lleneral, when the !altor,went abroad on active service. Whon ' Colonel Logan was granted, leave of absence as Administrator early in the present year. Colonel Tate was sent up as Acting-Administra-tor at a time succeeding the devastating epidemic when there was considerable unrest among the native population. His offi?es have had a conciliatory effect and generally his work as tho head of the Administration is said to have bcon quite satisfactory.
