LABOUR AT ENGLISH CIVIC ELECTIONS
FIRST FIGHT SINCE 1912. London, November .1. Tho first municipal elections in England since 1912 were held on Saturday. There were generally small polls. ■ Three thousand candidates, including: many women, stood for 1:183 seats in twentyeight London boroughs. Tho election results for London are available for only eight out of the twentyeijrlit boroughs. There was a remarkable Labour victory, by an absolute majority, in six boroughs. Thirty-two women wore elected. The provincial returns are very incomplete. Labour's gains are extensive, at t'>o expense of both Conservatives and Liberals, but their effect on the comnosition of the councils is limited, as only one-third of the members are elected annually— Aus.N.E. Cable Assn.
