CHILE AND BOLIVIA
A TRANSFER OF TERRITORY. (Tiec. November 5, 9.40 p.m.) Washington, November I. ' Chile has reded the territory of Arica to Bolivia, giving the latter country access to the Pacific coast. The territory contains large nitrate supplies. A further message states that the Bolivian Legation discredits the report of the cession.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assu. [The province of Arica was originally Peruvian, but, with Tncna.was occupied by Chile under a Treaty (188-i) providing that a popular vote in 1594 should decide their future ownership. The vote was not taken, owing to the failure of negotiations regarding the modus operandi. The mention of Bolivia in connection with Arica. therefore, is rather puzzling.l
