BUSH FIRES
DAMAGE TO FARMING PROPERTY. Reports of damage done by bush fixes in the Mastorton district during the week end wore received by the police yesterday. During Sunday bush fires broke out on the Tararua Ranges, and in the afternoon the heavy northerly gale caused them to spread with great rapidity. Sparks from the fires descended on wool and cow-sheds of Mr. John S. Holmes, M'ltahiwi Station, and at about 7 p.m. the buildings wore in flames. The sheds and contents, which wero valued at vEHOO, were totally destroyed. Tho property was insured for ,£760 in various offices. Tho station was being farmed by Mr. Edward Holme?. The wool slied and contents of Mr. Row. Lan B. Hunfs Btntion, at Miki Miki (12 miles from Masterton), wero also destroyed through sparks from tho bush fires. The property destroyed, winch was valued at about £21X1. was uninsured. Other properties suffered from the fires, and many residents of Masterton went out to tho farms in danger to render assistance. Several native farmers lost, a number of sheep, one 100 and one 100, and others smaller numbers. The missing half-pasto has turned up. No settlers' residences were lost.
