A young woman named Alary Ellen Wollaml was charged with going through a form of marriage with John Cairns Laverock, well knowing him to be already married, thereby committing bigamy. Laverock was also charged with bigamy in that ho went through a form of marriage with Alary El'.en Wolland while his present wife was still alive. He was further charged with making a false declaration on the niarriii;-.' certificate by stating that he was a oachelor, well knowing that to bo false. A plea of guilty was entered by Leonard Guy Walls, who was charged with making a false declaration to tho registrar of marriages at Nelson in order to obtain a marriage certificate by signing his name as Leonard Guy Sellnrs. Chief-Detective Hoddam said that tho accused recently married at Nelson and signed his n.imo as Seilnrs, whereas his correct name was Walls. When arrested by Detective Torrence ho made a full cciifession. The accused stated that he deserted froin H.M.S. Pyramus in 11114, and went to Nelson, where he resided under tho assumed name of Sellnrs. He enlisted in the. Expeditionary Force under his assumed name and Went to the iviir. lie told his wife his nssumed name, and ho did not think he was doing wrong in marrying under that nnme. The accused was committed to Hie Supreme Court for sentence, bail being allowed in two sureties of £lb each. FINED FOB THEFT. Charges of theft of six table forks, valued at 7s. 6d., the property of Hiddott and Grinis, and of theft of a silver watch, gold chain, and locket, the property of Duncan Hnrdie, were preferred against Charles Bryant. Tho second charge was reduced to one of common theft, nnd wasi dealt with summarily. On the charge of theft of the forks. Bryant was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within 12 months, and on the other charge the accused was fined .C 3, and ordered to refund the sum of i.7 Ifls., the value of the watch not recovered. The default -was fixed at 14 dnvs' imprisonment. Air. 11. F. O'Leary appeared for the accused. AN ABSCONDER FROM BURNIIAM. A Inn Hentscbe, 1G years, an absconder from the Burnhnm Industrial School, was arraigned on charges of having stolen a gold watch and chain, a greenstone pendant, a .El note, and a black silk handkerchief, valued at £11 55., the property of William John Braid, of having entered the premises of Heanio's medicine warehouse on Octolier 2l> and stealing.therefrom a cheque for .£'3o Is., and four postal notes valued at « 4 .'2 ss. 6d., the. property of Frank Al'Qunr-i-ie, and of having 'broken into tho warehouse of the Paramount Picture Films Company with intent to commit a crime. Plain Clothes Constable Hedgoninn said that the accused admitted the offences lifter he had given the police considerable trouble. Deutsche boarded at Young's Privato Hotel, where, the first offence was committed on October 15. He utole the goods from tho room of a fellow boarder. The accused worked at Hearne's warehouse, where the second crime was committed on Sunday, October 25. • The accused gained entrance by means of a bunch of stolen kevs, and after rummaging round he briiko the panels of the lift in the building nnd Blid down the rope to tho ParamountFilm Company's premises on,the lower flcor. Hero he was H>en by aii employee named Athol Jl'Ewan, who called tho police. Hentscbe, however, told a convincing story to the police about noticing that the premises were, open, nnd as he was employed :'n the same building he thought he might investigate, and the police let him go. On this occasion he gave n false name and address. Corroborative evidence was given by other witnesses. ■The accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to tho Supreme Court for sentence. OTHER PROSECUTIONS. A further remand for a week was Branled in the caso of John Reginald EIl:s, who was charged with the theft at I'oafchcrstoti of a monev order telegram, postal note, and a British postal order of a total value of ,13 10s., the property of Stanley Pe'rcival Clvnes. On a. charge of theft of a hide valued a- .U. the property of Daviibon nnd Company, Alfred Richard Senrle, who was represented by Air. W. G. Alellish. was remanded till November 12. Bail was «.llowe.rl in the sum of .£25. Ahchacl Kiel.y was remanded tii'l this morning on a charge of theft of two overcoats, valued nt .£lO, the property o) Donald Alncleay. For drunkenness. John Gould was fined Al, and one first offender was fined 10s.
