STABBING AFFRAY IN THE CITY
MAN SERIOUSLY WOUNDED
AN ARREST MADE
A serious stabbing affray occurred in I lie city at a quarter to eight o'clock lasji night, when the proprietor of the Oxford Dining Rooms, situated at the corner of Dixon Sheet and Qnin Street, received injuries which necessitated an immediate operation. At the hour named a man named Don Carlos entered tho Oxford Dining Rooms with a view to having a m?al. lie approached the proprietor, a man named William Eussell, who informed Carlos that dinner was over, and that no further meals could be served.
Carlos thereupon became abusive, and it is alleged that he proceeded to wreck the interior of the establishment. The proprietor endeavoured in reason with Carlos, and then ordered him olf too premises. Carlos continued to be abusive, and as he left the establishment lip smashed the two windows in the door with his fist". He dlien ran up Quia Street, chased by Russell, who subsequently closed with him. A rough-and-tumble took place, during which, it is alleged, Carlos slabbed Russell in the groin on the left sida with a knife. Notwithstanding bis injuries, Russell maintained his hold of Carlos and cried for help. Onlookers summoned tho police, and Carlos was arrested bv a sergeant and a constable from the I'aranaki Street Police Station.
Dr. R. C. Begg, of Willis Street, was summoned to atltend tho injured man, who was immediately removed to Nurse Lucas's private hospital. An operation was performed right away, and at a lata hour last night it was staled that Russell's injury was serious, but he was progressing' favourably. Carlos will appear before the 'Magistrate's Court this morning, when ho will be formally charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.
