When Artilleryman -finished at the head of the Melbourne Clip field at Flemington yesterday he was tho eighteenth three-vear-010. to win the race in its fifty-nino years' history. Apparently the three-vear-old made no race of the event, as- he won by six lengths in !)min. 2-t 1-Isec, a second and a half better than the previous best timo registered. Tho time is only a quarter of a second out of tho Australasian record established by Warstep at Trentham. Early this season Australian writers suggested that the reason's three-year-olds were an indifferent lot. but with Artilleryman iiist' nnd Eichmond Main second in the Cup, this suggestion lias turned out to be a verv baa' one. Artilleryman is bred to Btay. His .sire Comedy King (Persimmon—Tragedy Queen) could get over a distance, and his dam Cross Battery (Stepniak—Firecross). is a grand-do lighter, ou. the maternal side, lo Crossfire, tvhose brother Arsenal won the Cup in 188 G. Crossfire threw Alawa, who carried list. 31b. ; n to second place in the JflD!) Melbourno Cup. Artilleryman hus 'been. a ' grand bargain, seeing that Sir Samuel tiordern orjy paid a lliOOgns. for hiu at the Shipley oispereal sale in ' 'January last year. The following horses have won the Melbourno Cup and later sired ' winners of Iho same race:—Tim Whiffle!, won in 18117, and sired Briseis, who won in 1870, and Darriwell, ' wlin scored in 1879; Malua won in 188J-, and was the sire of Malvolio, winner of tho 1891 race. Comedy King, the only Eng-lish-bred horso to win, is now to lx' lidded to the short list of .Melbourno Cup ■winners who have sired winners of that event. E. Lewis, rider of Artilli-ryman, has riodeii in over a score of Melbourne • Cups.' and has been first home in previous events on The Victory in 1902 and Fatrobas in 1915.

I The winner of the November Nursery Handicap. Capclla, is one of Mr. B. E. D. Clarke's breed, being by The Welkin from Wilga. I'ho New SCenhmd-bred and owned Delight, with list, lib., could onlv get second, but this was creditable, seeinir she was giving the winner a good deal of weight. The, winner of the Yan Yean Slakes, ISlhiopiaii, is an English-bred horse, fcjing by Dark I'onalo'froni Zobeyde. He is owned by.tho ex-New Zealander, Mr. ,W. Eiordak,

Mssc, Tho Cup favourite was not ridden out, and, though ho finished well, did not look ns if he could have done much better. Considering that: lie w'as heavily shod and had not been on the grass for a long timo, tho gallop was entirely satisfactory. Eleus was too good for Bingham over twelve furlongs in 2min. 47 4-ssec. St. Winnow finished well at the end of a sprint.

Desert Gold and Murihiku jumped off at the five-furlongs peg nnd raced together to the straight, where Desert Gold had her companion's measure, and went on alone to reach the winning post in lmin. 3 3-ssec. All were carrying feather-weights.. Mascot forced the pace at tho top of lihe' straight. She had a big lead, but Vagabond wore her down and won somewhat comfortably at the finish, with Hurry Up beaten off. Yolo was given n, working gallon, while Arch Salute and First Salute ran a mils in lmin. 49sec. Glenshine and Flcetham finished together at the end of seven furlongs, run in lmin. 34 d-sscc., but Flcothnm'looked to be holding his companion. Algedos was too good for Nantvillo over'five furlonus. run in lmin. <tsec. Wardaneer, with tho assistance of Warlove (who was brought out of tho paddock a.pd was barefooted) over (lie last seven 'furlongs, ran a mile in lmin. 47sec. Trotting round to the five-furlongs peg Bon Spec jumped off and rattled horns in the smart time of lmin. 1 3-ssec. Tt transpired afterwards that, Bon Spec had swerved inside the trestles when ho rushed off, which means that he did not cover as much ground as tho other* •ivho went five furlongs. Royal Star'and Tramina, brought home by Amaranth, ran six furlongs in lmin. 17. 3-ssec, Royal Star being an easy' winner. After breakfast Sedd-el-Bahr and Cabin- j ria ran six furlongs together in lmin. ! 19 i-osoc., finishing will. .- j Kilrush and Sans Souei both'carrying i small boys, set out from the seven-fur- j longs peg together. Ho simply romped homo in front of the division he galloped with. Whilo riding a green filly, a sister to Partisan, at the barrier, F. Cann, an apprentice in F. Christmas's stable, got thrown, and had tho misfortune to break a bone in, his shoulder. ■ Tho C.J.C. have arranged to erect seating accommodation for 2000 people m the. temporary stand, and a start was made on the job to-day.
