MARKET NOTES
» HIGH PRICES FOE TOMATOES. Tomatoes are in keen demand in Wellington ut the present time. On Saturday last one line of hot-house tomatoes from tlio lower Hutt mis sold at 3s. 3d. per lb. A new variety of banana, called tlio "mario," after the stamped name upon tlio cases, has been arriving from Itarotonga bv tho last few boats. The fruit is plainly of the banana family, about as small as tho Queensland variety, but distinguishable! As the end opposite tho stalk terminates in what looks like tho thhk end of another stalk, an extension of tho 6kin for about half an inch beyond the fruit. The "mario" yellows beautifully, but even whoa ripened i has a slightly sour taste which suits I some palate? but not all. Tlio Tofua's bananas sold yesterday from 235. to 255. a case, which means that the retailer ' is paying a little over a shilling a dozen for them.. Carrots and turnips are still right up in price. Spring carrots—four to five inches long—were- sold wholesale in tho markets yesterday at 7d. per small bunch. Cabbages are in full supply and fairly cheap. . Stunner apples, and a few Rokewoods, were sold on Saturday at £1 per case. A time will soon arrive when the quantity in cold store will not justify the running of refrigerating plants. There should be more placed on tho market very shortly, but it is scarcely likely that tho price will recedo much between this and Christmas (when wo shall bo almost solely dependent on tho imported apple).
