TUG-O'-WAR

The tug-of-war at tbe Town Hall has attracted much interest, and provided some eood contests. Last night the lightweight final was pulled between l'ctono and oDirk's team, both with unbeaten : records. The men were heartily cheered as they mounted the platform, and ; there wad subdued excitement ns they • settled down for the pull. A splenoid start was effected, and both teams fought desperately for an advantage, but the honours remained even. At one moment Quirk's made a great effort, and took an inch, which they managed, to hold fnirlv well. Brice, the Petono captain, was now working his men well, and at three minutes they drow level, and with two quick pulls gainea an inch. There was t'reat ejeileir.ent, and the cheering ' was deafening, l'etone were hard press- , ed to keen the advantage. Occasionally Quirk's men raised tho hopes ot their ' supporters by very good work, but they f.ould not shift the l'etone men, who veio . holding with a vice-like grip. At four . and a half minutes both teams were put- . ting in every ounce of weight, and the ■ enthusiasm of tho crowd was groat. But l'etone were immovabL, and tho referee called timo with Petone still ono inch to the 2000. The win was very popular, and both teams received great applause. l'etone were ably captained by Mr. • Stun Brice.- and Quirk's team was led bvJlr. F. Moloney. The heavy-weight contest between Her- : iiliy's and Dallon's teumswas also good. Hcrliliv's side worked well, and shortly after the start they began to gain. Amidst loud cheering they held and iucreasoo.' their margin, and won by three inches. The prizes for the light-weight contests were presented by Mr. D. A. Guise on ' behalf of the management Mr. Gui?e i cniiLMiiliilated tho winners, and comment- ! ed on the spirit of the true sportsmanfhin wliich hud been shown by the comnetilors. Both M.vsrs. Brice and i Mnlonev wore loudly cheered as they re- < eeived their rewards. To-night, Hunt, Cotirell's team will S»et l'etone at. 8.15 p.m., and Glesson's team will try conclusions with deary's. Both contests are in tho heavy-weight division.
