WELCOME FROM BERHAMPOEB.

Between 150 and 200 people assembled at tho Masonio Hall, Berhamporc. last week to extend a welcome homo to the returned soldiers of the district. I lie gathering took the form of a concert and tlanee. The chairman, Mr. A. A. "hitelaw, who officiated in the unavoidable absenco of ilio Mayor, referred to the fact that over 120 lads of tho district had gone to tho front. An excellent concert was given by the following: Mi«.os M'Keon and Norm and Messrs Peek, M'Keon, Goudie, Spencer, and Jl Kenzie. A daintv supper, served by the ladies of the district, succeeded the concert. Tho toast of "The King having been honoured, the chairman proposed Tho Guests of the Evening.; This toast had been originally entrusted o Mr. George Flux, late headmaster of the South Welliu"ton School, in which institution most of Iho returned men had received tbeir early education, but ill-health prevented his attendance. M'- Whitclaw spoke of' tho gratitude all felt to the soldiers for their noble efforts- preserve the liberties and freedom which were endangered by (he ex-Kaijer and his Allies, and for which Britislmrs would prefer to die rather than surrender. Ho particularly referred to ths- modesty of the soldiers in attempting to minimise their services on behalf of hmmiillity. Lieutenants Tomlin and Ewl»n and Sergeant M'Keon responded to the toasl. Mr. Bennett, in proposing? tlif loast of "TJ ) Ladies," referred to I heir invaluablo seivices at all times, and purlicularly during tho war. Mr. Taylor responded on behalf-of the ladies. During the evening a motion was passed, expressing sympathy villi Mr. Flux in his illness, and the hope of his speedy recovery. All the old boys of So»lh \\el. liiiglon School signed the resolution, which will be forwarded lo Mr. Flux. It. is the intention of the residents of the district to raise a suitable memorial to the fallen soldiers of the district at ail early date'.
