THE TUG-OF-WAR. The Catholic bazaar was the scene of much activity and animation last night. Good sales were reported and business seemed to be very brisk. No doubt the graceful dancing and protty tableaux were an attraction in themselves, and reflected great credit on Miss Putnam, tho directress.
Keen interest centred round the lug-of-wnr, when Petone and ITorlihey's teams met in the semi-final for the lightweights. Both teams looked very fit as they filed on to the platform. Petone jumped off "with tho lead when the whistle went, and registered an inch, and then began ono of the keenest pulls ever seen ill Wellington. Herlihey's team, bv strenuous work, equalised things, and the 'big indicator swayed first one way and Ihen (ho other. The exeilement became intense, and when four minutes were called Petone had a lead of two inches. Both teams (lien were siraining (heir ulmost, and amidst great cheering tlio indicator began to creep back to the centre. I'elone by fine pulling steadied it for a. few seconds, and managed to hold it half an inch when the referee called time. In the heavy-weight contest the Petone men were pilled against Cleary's. Again (he audience was Ireated to a splendid match, Polmie finally holding by half an inch on the call of time. The final of Ihe light-weights will be decided on Monday evening at 8.15, when Petone will meet Quirk's team.
