MANAWATU At the Palmerston North Police Court on Wednesday three youths were charged with breaking and entering' several premises, and stealing therefrom good-, of various kinds, motor tyres, cutlery, cigarettes, and money. . Two of the accused pleaded guilty and were remanded for sentence, while tho third was committed for trial. The question of the administration and construction and subsequent maintenance of the proposed Mangiahao electrical power scheme was brought up at a meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon. The discussion arose tliTongh a statement of the chairman (Mr. E. H. Crabb), who was also chairman of the A'iiribviro Committee, to tho effect that the Minister of Public Works had expressed himself in the House as being opposed to a national board of control having any administrative influence in the constructional part of thfl scheme.' though he was in agreement with the board wielding control in maintenance. Air. Crabb expressed disapproval of the Minister's intention, and suggested that a telegram K» sent to Air. ,T. A. Nash, member for the district, urging him lo oppose tho Minister's proposal. The meeting approved of Guch action being taken. A meeting of the council of the Pni'morston North Chamber of Commerce was held on AYednesdny afternoon, at which a fair amount of business was done. Amongst tho most important matters dealt with were defects in the present postal and telephonic service. Tho matter was 'brought up by correspondence submitted by Mr. J. M. Johnston, which had passed between him and the postmaster at Palmerston North regarding tho establishment of a letter telephone servico between that centre and AVellington, in which Mr. Johnston had pointd out the congestion which had arisen, and gave suggestions for improvements. The postmaster, in reply, stated that the material for forming a greater connection between the two places was not now available, but the system would be extended as soon as the necessary supp'y was forthcoming. Mr. Johnston went on to complain that other towns further up the lino were getting in ahead of Fftlmerston, which was a more important centre. He had submitted the matter to tho chamber that it should not be lost sight of, but he felt thai nothing more could bo done at present without tho present staff could bo strengthened. It was decided to support a list of suggestions sent forward by the Canterbury Cham'bor of Commercu urging tho completion of railways under construction.

A motor-car collision took place near Otuki on "Wednesday morning. Mr. Pudnam (representative for Dalgety and Co.), with Mr. Bert Gieeson, were driving down to the Te Horo sale in a small car when at a bad corner they came into collision with a heavy car driven by Mr. T. Quinlivan, wlio was accompanied by his wife. . There was a bad smash, the cars being interlocked. Mrs. Quinlivan suffered injuries to her nose, but fortunately her injuries are not serioun. Air. Gieeson was badly bruised nbout the body, but the others escaped with a shaking. The cars were considerably damaged. Dr. Louis Cohen, elder son of Mr. Maurlco Cohen, of Pftlmerston, has returned from active service. Ho' has been away lor ..over twelve years stuaying for the medical profession. He was in Eng>'and when the war broko out, and immediately volunteered for service, and remained at the front until after tho signing of the armistice; when he returned to L'ngland and took his final desrees.
