WAIRARAPA SHOW
OPENING DAY
A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION SPLENDID DISP AY OF STOCK Driving rain hailed the opening of the. Wairarapa' Show at Carterton yesterday. A wet day was not unexpected. This is the forty-second show held' under the auspices of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society, and of these only two—at the most three —have been favoured with fine weather. Tho disappointment of exhibitors ivas, however, considerably relieved on account of their knonvlgo that rain was badly needed in the district, feed being very scarce. This was reflected in the fat cattlo classes, which were sadly- neglected by exhibitors. In the afternoon the weather clears! and continued fine. As typifying the- progress of tho' society j4 is eignifirnnr. lliat tho total entries (2120) constituted a record. This represents a big jump, of 500 from last year's totals, i EecofrnisirtK tTiat the Cnrterton Show is becoming increasingly popular ifith outside exhibitors the society turned its attention (hiring tho recess to providing improved facilities for exhibitors. To this end it has erected since last show a large and commodious cattle jwvilion, -with a capacity lor 150 beasts, all securely sheltered from wind ami rniii'.' Tho buildings have also been supplemented by the erection of pig pens in concrete, with overhead shelter, sufficient for about 50 animals. .
Judges' Remarks, The big bid that "WaiTaTapa is making as one of the chief pastoral and milking districts of the Dominion 13 reflected in the splendid all-round quality of the exhibits of stock at the show,, The judges of come sections went into raptures over the exhibits. Mr. Fred. Vauchan, of Hukaka, who judged the pnreJ>red;;Shorthorns, described them as befn# as fine a lot as had ever been pot together in a show ring in New Zealand. It was a pleasure, on account of "their , general excellence, to judge them. • Speaking as a fiawke's Bay faTreer he ivae: pleased to see that in some seotions local breeders outclassed the stock representative of his province. The Wairarapa animals compared favourably with Shorthorn cattle that had come "before him in the show' ring in the Dominion, and they were a credit to the district. Sir Walter Buchanan was, as usual, to the fore among local breeders, gaining many, high awards. The milking Shorthorns also pleased the jndge, Mr. T. H. Windlcy, of Te Horo, whose award for champion bull went to Mrs. J. Wall, of Hastings, for a diHjp red animal, Mr. S.,.Bpf.ton, of Pahiatua, coming a •very gpixl second with another red. The others'were-all nico dairy bulls, There was a bigger, entry for. two-year-old bulls of-fair .quality. The honours in the yearling .bull class .went to Mrs. Wall, and, the animal, she exhibited was described by.- , the-judge- as tho coming champion. The aged cows, wore easily judged, Mr. Bolton.-winning the championslup. The three-year cows , were referred to as a grand lot, while in two-year there was a weak eritryi -but good staff. As regardg'the milkers, the judge remarked that they were a very good class indeed, but needed.a little more, attention. As to the Aberdeen Angus breed, these are not usually shown in any great number, and the entries at the present show are .very satisfactory. They comprised, commented the judge, very fine exhibitions. In;Herefords, also, the quality was described' as" very high. Tho JViesdans vere," not a very extensive lot, but were nlLTgopd; beasts, while as regards AyrBhires.. therq irae not' a. weak beast in the collection.- The cattle were indeed, good-.01l round, the yearlings and two-year-old crossbreds'lwing quite a feature of tho show. The champion Jersey crossbred, exhibited by A. N. Johnston, of Carterton, was a very fine animal, and was -the centre of much admiration throughout tho day.
Sheep Classes, Aa was only natural, sheep were a pleasing-feature of the show. In Southdowns, the. judge, Mr.S. R, Lancaster, of Palmereton North, remarked that they were a • very good class right through. The...winning sheep compared favourably, with any he had eve r seen, their quality lieing exceptional. Tn passing, the. judge pointed' out that the old Nelson Bros', flock, now dispersed, wns very much iniesed in the pens, making , the competition very (limited. Wairarapa is noted for its Romney Marsh sheep, nnd judges cjuiokly como to the opinion that representatives of this breed n.t tho show were' nil" of very excellent quality. Messrs. W. Porry and B. Rnyner, of Sfostarton, and Mr. G. B. lAJlon, of Taratahi, were the most successful exhibitors in well-con-tested classes. GJincolns also pleased the judges,. and Mes3rs. B. Baynor, !A. E. Anderson (of ClarovSle), and W. Perry ■were in particular successful. Among the Corriedalcs iho iudge was again very fnvonraWy iinpresoil, the; sheep of this breed shown having excellent pointe for wool. Fat sheep have always been a feature of tho Cartorton Show, and at, this fixture they provetl to bo no exception to tho rulo, the quality being good all round. Pigs. Housed in now substantial pons, the pigs como up to oxpoctnHoM, both in point of quality and quantity. The judge, Mr. S. R, Lancaster, described all tlie. breeds exhibited as buing of exceptionally good quality-the-y wore quite up to any standard lis nad wen in New Zealand. Ho had not seon n hotter lot of pigs for many years, every class competing como up to standard.
