NEW TRAMWAY TRACK
BEING LAID MORE SOUNDLY. When the tramway tracks for the electric cars were) laid through the city, . they were not laid quite so securely as they might have been, though up* till the present the tracks may bo enid to Lave;'.worn "well. The method of simply basing, the steel rails in- concrete, giving foundation support at intervals with a section of upturned rail (embedded in ooncrete), which was bolted on to tho baso of tho rail proper, was porhaps quite a scf.id footing at tho time, but in re-laying tho track along Lambton Quay a vast improvement is being made by bolting the vails to reinforced concrete sleepers placed ten feet apart, which, in turn, .will bo embedded secure.ly in concrete. Tho section now being lelaid between Grey and Feathorston Streets intersections was the worst in tho city. .The reason for that being tho caso was the big fire which devastated that portion of Lambton Quay over a <lecade ago. Tho heat from the fire was so great that the wood-blocks took fire, and in many places were charred to over an inch in depth. It was not surprising, therefore, to learn that the rails were affected by tho heat, and had "sprung" .'lightly in some places. . Given fine weather, the whole of the section botween Willis Street and Grey Street, along the Quay, will-be relaid well 'before the end of November.
