LYALL BAY'S WANTS
deputation to tramways COMMITTEE.
A deputation representing the Lyall Bay Municipal Electors Association waißcd on tho Tramways Committee ot the City Council yesterday afternoon to prefer' certain requests calculated ,to improve tho tramway traffic conditions between tho city and tho Bay. , Mr. It. L. Jones (secretary of the association) said that more cars were needed on the Lj aii Bay 'service, and suggested that tho tenminutes service to tlio boundary should be curtailed to a twenty-minutes fervice, and the allernato car shouldl run down to tho last loop on Onepu Eoad, which would mean that it would bo tiavelling about the same distance, and would occupy the same time, lhe extra car would be very serviceable at rush hours, whereas a great many of tho cars now running to the boundary wcro running empty. ~,,,,, .• , Mr. JoiiCo also aeked that tho optional stopping place at llassclls corner (on Onepu Koad) be made a compulsory stop. Thero was generally ft group of people waiting at that corner, and a seat of some kind would be a great' convenience, especially to the elderly people. He also bespoko ft scat for the stop at tho junction of Coutl'i Slreet and Onepu Eoad. Mr. 11.I 1 . J. Evans spoke of .tho rush hour troubles. He stated that tho car which left the Buildings for the Bay at 5.5 p.m. was always overcrowded before it reached Courlenay Place, but numbers of those who travelled by it wcro not passengers for the Bay. Ho suggested that the car should U-avo Courtenay Place, wliero thero were always sufficient Bay people lo fill it. In reply to the deputation, tho chairman. (Mr. J. P. Luke) said that as far as tho running of the trams was concerned, what seemed to be a. very simple matter often involved going into and altering tho running of the whole of the cars. As a matter of fact, they had not tho col's, and if they had them they hud not the available power lo keep them going at present, nor would they have it until they got the now boiler going in the power-house. That would bo in shortly, and he hoped to have six now cars running at Christmas time, which would give further facilities for traffic and benefit tho public. As to a com■pulsory stop at llassclls corner, tho Mayor pointed out that every stop added lo the cost, and that was why there were so many request stope instead of being all compulsory. Ho would get tho Tramways Manager to report on the matter. As to the seats ho was afraid they could not lw nrovided, if they obtruded on to the footpath, as if they lijapponcd to causo any accident Itho council would be liable for damages. The rush hour traffic was purely a matter for tho management to deal with. They wore now in a position with their trams that they must watcii every nenny in the way of They liad recently had occasion to raise their fares, yet the credit; balance for the four weeks ended October 13 was .£779, as com pared wit h .£679 for tho corresponding period of last year—only .£IOO more, The actual increase in tho working expenses for the four weeks mentioned was iEalGt, whilst tho increase in working expenses from the commencement of tho financial year amounted to .£19,614, Tho committee would take the suggestion? Into consideration, and if they could give ti-.»jn anv assistance they were quito willing to do so. . Tho suggestions were referred to the Tramways Manager for a report.
