TRENTHAM RACES
RECORD ATTENDANCE
GLOAMING WINS CHAMPION PLATE
PEARCE HANDICAP WON BY HURRY UP
Thero was a record crowd at Trentham for the concluding day's races. Tho meeting passed off most successfully. The racing was keen, but tho favourites fared badly, and somo short priced ones were defeated Onco again seating accommodation in the stands was at a premium, and tho committee will have to at once go into tho question of extensive enlargements. Tho big handicap respited in a stirring contest, and tho three place-getters were only separated by heads. Tho favour.to was a trifle unlucky, inasmuch os ho got off badly, had to cover a lot of extra ground, nnd then only buffered defeat by a narrow margin. Mr. A. B. Williams's colt Humbug added to his reputation 'by his most convincing display in the Juvenile Stakes, and many credit him with being a second Desert Gold. Secretary A. E. Whyte and his able assistant, Mr. J. M. Griffiths, had everything in smooth working order. The totalisator staff had nn exceptionally busy day, and the total put through reached 172,750 10s. at the end of the eighth race. This is an increase of .£25,851 10s. compared with last year. Tho investments during the two days amounted to 1123,934, compared with 182,056 at last year's meeting. There wore three well-backed run;iors in the Eoseneath Handicap. The actual favourite was Kildee, but there was little between her, tho Duncan bracket, and Gasbag. The latter was fractious at the barrier, and jumped out badly. Kildee and Wake were soon in charge, and at the two furlongs they were joined by Blackmail. The last-named, on the rails, and Wako fought out a great finish, victory going to -Blackmail by half a head. Gasbag was a length away, and thon came Tropical Kohu was withdrawn from tho lararua Handicap, and Bonnio Heather, on whom 11, Reed was given the mount, was made a very warm favourite. He carried more money than has ever previously been invested on a horse all Trentham. At the start the favourite and Makepeace were squeezed out, and Printemps, Matty.nnd Mnchreo led down the back. Tho favourite got a run on tho fence the whole way, and took charge two furlongs from homo. He won very comfortably from Royal Exchange, who finished well, nnd Printcmps. Makepeace was fourth. The winner scored comfortably, nnd should soon run out of hack class. Over three thousand pounds was invested on Motuihi in Hie Spring Trial Stakes, while Falstaff-nnd Bonetter also carried over four figures. Motuihi soon took charge and led Hallowvonia and Prince llnf down the back and- into the straight. Then Bonctler camo on the scene, and in the run to tho post she easily beat the favourite, and won by n length. Prince Hal was tloso up, aiid then came Falstall. Rossini was the third horse in succession that carried over 13000 on the machine. He did not begin too well, but soon got a position, and after allowing Astinoine and Trcssida to set a very fast pace into the straight, the topweight then took charge, but was immediately challenged by Hurry Up. A furlong from home Crcnidcs joined the leaders, and in a stirring finish Hurry Up won by a bead from Crcnidcs, with tho favourite the snme distance away. Bagdad was close tip fourth. The winner Tan a much better race than on the opening day, and was evidently improved for his race, as did Crcnidcs, while tho favourite was unlucky enough to be on tho outside of three horses on tho homo turn. Thero was another very hot order in the Juvenile Stakes. This was Humbug, who so far holds an unbeaten certificate. To-day he got n bad passage for three furlongs, but in the straight ho came on the outside and buried the opposition. His rider was actually pulling him up when the post was reached. Saima nnd W-eary Willlie led into the straight, with Right and Left close up. The favourite put in a sensational run over the last furlong, and won very decisively, There is-now a lot of interest in tho C.J.C. Welcome Slakes as to how tho winner will faro with Moorfow). The crowd recognised the merit of his performance, and gave him a cheer as ho enmo back to weigh in. Volo was withdrawn from the Champion Plate, for which Gloaming was tho hottest favourite of the meeting. He stripped very well, as did Affectation, but. Desert Gold was, as usual at this stage of the season, much above herself. Gloaming was first out, and lie led Affectation out of tho straight. At the miie post Mascot took charge, and led the. favourite at a fast pace down the back, and round the homo turn. Here the favourite took charge, and Affectation and Desert Gold also made forward moves. The champion held his own, and won comfortably by a length from Affectation, who beat Mascot by half a length, with Desert Gold close 'up. The winner was well received by the crowd when Decley brought him back to weigh in. Admyrn, Sir Fanciful, Idleness, and Mnchreo were the scrntchings for the Ruahino Handicap. The Chokebore colt Acquittal was a big tip on the course, as he was credited with being unlucky on Ilia opening day. Several of the other .runners were also well hacked. Hvmnrty and Nursing Sister piloted the field into the straight, where the favourite got clear, and though he was challenged by Active, the 'leader held his own. and won by a neck. Kyoto was two two lengths away, and then came Nursing Sister and Sweet Memory. The latter lost several lengths at the post, but ran on well nt the finish.
'there were several scratching in tho Nainai Handicap, but it proved a gocd bctling event, and there was a pool of close unon ,£12,000. Do-Peep was the actual favourite, while Tfetaua also had plenty of supporters. Demos and Silver Link led into the straight, whore Hclaua and ICipling joined Silver Link, and the trio raced in a line for n furlong, where 80-Peep joined in. Silver Link and 80-Peep faded one hundred yards from the post, but. the oilier pair fought out a good finish, victory going to HeLum bv a head. Mata'tua was third. 80-Peon fell a few strides off the post, lint her rider was not injured.
