SOLDIER SETTLEMENT
AN OTAGO ESTATE. A suggestion that the Government acquire for soldiei settlement the Hnkataramca estate, in Otago, was made in fho House by Mr. Anstey. He said that the estate was owned by an absentee company, and it was an aggregation of some freehold, several Crown leases, and some high school reserves. The total area of the estate was 90,000 acres, and tho fact that three thousand fat lambs had been taken off the estate last year was some evidence that the'land was capable of cultivation of a moo'oratn sort. The total carrying capacity of the esiate was 30,000 sheep. Ho had it from residents that tho estate was cap. able of subdiviskn into small grazing runs—fifteen or ((ivcuty of them—and there would be a strong demand for the laud from returned soldiers with experience of this class of country. The Minister said that he had not been aware of the area of the estate, nor the quality of the land. He had had inquiries made about the estate, but up till the present they had not led to any definite result. He would have the matter taken up again at ouce. He knew that there was a demand in the district for land of this character, and every, thing possible would be done to satisfy tho demand.
