The lion. E. Mitchclson and Mrs. Mitchelson. of Auckland, have left for a holiday in Australia. Tho death occurred on Saturday evening at the Clifton Terrace Hospital of Mr. Laurence Laurenson, ot the ago of 88 years. Mr. Laurenson came from the, Shetland Islands with a number of people from that place to form <i settlement, at ICaranica, in the South Island, in the early seventies. However, this did not prove a successful venture, and the settlement was broken up. Mr. Laurenson moved to Palmerston North in 1870, and had lived there for some years, afterwards coming to Wellington. While in Palmerston North Mr. Laurenson lost his wife, two sons, and a daughter, the only surviving son being .Mr. John Laurenson, an officer on the Post and Telegraph staff, Wellington. The funeral took place at Palmerston North yesterday, and was largely attended. Air. Joseph Best, a well-known farmer in the Kniranga district, who had heon in failing health for some time, passed away at his residence on Sunday (says ou,r Palmei'ston correspondent). Although Mr. flest bad only resided in the district about 20 years, lie was a verv old colonist, being one of the well-known Best family which settled in the Appleby (Nelson) district in the very early days. When in that district, Mr. Best was a member of several' local bodies. During his residence in this district he wns a frequent and successful exhibitor at Palmerston North shows. He is survived by a wife and a family of eleven. Mr. L. H. Asbbolt, of Hobart, who has boen appointed Agent-General for Tasmania, in London, .in succession to tlie late Sir John M'Call, is the eldest son of the late Mr. A. Ashbolt, of Wellington. well known for many years as a cricket enthusiast. Mr. Ashbolt; has been managing director of a well-known firm in Hobart for several years.
