DEARNESS OP SILVER
DUE TO CHINESE BUYING. » ■ X_ . (Bee October 26. 5.5 p.m.) ■ London, OotoT)er 23. Tho doarness of silver has caused a revival of tho rumour that it will bo possible to issue notes for five shillings and even lower values. The price Of tho franc has risen above the face valup of coins. The Government is minting an additional ten million francs worth of nickol coins. A prominent London bullion broker, when interviewed, stated that Iw uoes not anticipate the- issue of small notes, and even if these'are issued they «$ not likely to have any serious effect on tho value of silver, as the high prico is entirely due to tho Chinese buying. It is very uncertain how long l this will last, but it will probably continue until tho Chinese Now Year. Any prolonged cessation of Chinese buying would cause a big fall, as large ouantities of American would be sent to Europe instead of* to China.-Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
