The weather yesterday was thoroughly spring-like. Lovely warm sunshine without any wind has been experienced, and fanners are hoping that this will continue.. as it will give them an opportunity to get in their spring crops. Dairymen, too, w.ill welcome the change, as up to the present, although tho grass has \ been looking green, there has been practically no substanco in it, and tho supply of milk has been very poor. The change has _jifst come in time, for tho dairv factories have been very much perturbed at the short supply of milk. This should now improve as some of the later cows conic in, but those which calved earlv are not likely to recover to any extent their milking qualities, as if the circumstances are unfavourable, for tho first flush of milk in many cases but littio improvement can bo looked for later. The, gardens aro now beginning to ioek well, and there should be an abundance of vegetables shortly, while the fruit trees also look very promising. Shearing is now in full swing, and thoso engaged' in that occupation will hail with delight a few weeks of warm dry weather. The local branch of the Post and Telegraph service mot to discuss tlieir position in connection with tho war bonus. The matter was thoroughly gone into, and it was decided to 6end a series of resolutions to the Postmaster-General and members of Parliament, urging Parliament to place a sum on the Estimates 'if this had not already been done) to provide a bonus for members of the scrvice.^ The Ladies' Golf Club closed' its season on Thursday with a series of competitions for trophies. The results were:--Approaching and putting, Mrs. S. A, \braham; putting. Miss Moore; stroke, Miss Blackmore; bogey, Miss Loughnan; iunior bogey, Miss N. Coombes.
DANNEVIRKE Mr. I'ercival Dbdds, who was very successful at the Gisborno musical competitions. has entered for the principal vocal items at the forthcoming competitions in 'Wellington. Orniondvillo has decided to hold a big sports gathering on January 7 next, at which, in addition to nthletic events, there will be a big wood-chopping competition. •So far as can be gathered, the candidates for the I'ahiatua seat will comnrise Messis. A, Al.'Nicol, of Dannevirke (Beform), li. B. Boss, of Porangahau (Liberal), and B. S. L. Rice, of Te Behunsia. (Labour). Labour Day ivill bo celebrated on Monday with the opening of the bowling season, while the Golf Club has some fixtures for the day, and tho ]iiflo"plub hai arranged a series of match. / The Ilukanui store, with dwellinghouse and outbuildings, has been destroyed bv tire. The'owner, Mr. A. 'Gilchrist, was nsvav in Wellington. The occupants bad a narrow escape, the flames having a strong hold when they were awakened. Owing to the reduced attendance in the secondary department of the J'ahiatun High School, tho Educalion Hoard has cancellcd the appointment of ono of tli;> assistant lady teachers. The average attendance at the Pahiatua public school is now 224, the highest being 23V, with an average percentage of 9(1.
