WELLINGTON SPRING RACES

. ~. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. (By "Glencoe.") Fine weather is,promised for to-day's races, and there will- probably be a 'record' crowd at Trenthani, including a veiy large conlirigent of visitors. Tho tracks are in first-class order, and fast times will be .15*0 order.of the day. There ■will bo a lot of interest in tho Welleslev Stakes, for which a good field is assured. Class it; also well represented in the other events. ;. Proceedings will open' with the Seatoun Handicap, of seven furlongs. There is an acceptance of eighteen horse?, but several will be-missiug when the field goes to the post. Tho top, weight, Philomela. looks above herself, and may not be ready, while Red Signal has been racing badly. Bonny Heather may be •reserved for the mile race, over which distance l>e is more at home, and Flight Commander and Galore have ; already been withdrawn, ' Utnwai has not been •brouzht down, and Arch Lassie would bo more at home over a shorter course. This narrows the race -down considerably. • Favouritism, -may- rest with Royal Exchange, a 'dual: winner at Otaki, Warlike. who showed winning form at Dannevirke, and 'Prince Hal. They' are very likely sorts of three-year-olds, who . showed good form in : the Trial Plato in July; and who 1 bear a very ready appcarance. For the Taita. Handicap, four furlongs, there are some useful two-year-olds engaged; but several of them-are very green, ai)d will not bo seen.at their best on a straight course. The favourite may be Caricature, one of the Absurd breed, who has had some experience, and who is reported to have been unlucky in her Taces 'ai: Arondole. Another very likely eort is Maungarango, who bears a. very, ready appcarance; and who made a very respectable showing against the older horses at Levin when meeting them on level terms. Tessavcs, if started, will be one of the favourites, (is she galloped really, well yesterday morning, but she 19 -also engaged in the Wellesley Stakes, nnd may be started in the latter event.

The Wainui Handicap will see several New Zealand .Cup horses in action. Vagabond lias not galloped well since r.omins to Trcniham, but Mascot, is lookins and going well, fo, too, are Hurry Up and HetanaJ and one i of the lastnamed pair may bo favourite. Tf reserved for the Rimutaka Handicap. Bonny Heather may be a good favourite. for lie has won nt his last two starts, an<i' seems to be an improving horse, while he will also be at home in the small field, Moutoa Ivanova has run several good races in open company of. late, and she. may trouble the favourite before the post is reached. Tortrix has gone wrens:, and will.not be a runner at the meeting. The following are the probable starters and their riders in the Wellington Handicap :— ' Nobleman, Bst. 121b. (A. Oliver).. Kilnish, Bst. 21b. (J. Olson). Rose Pink, Sst; lib (H. YoungV Battle Song, 7st. 121l>. (P. Rayncr). Hetaua, 7st. 101b. (R Uppd) Crenidcs. 7st 101b. (R. Young). Lucid. 7st. 611>. (R. Bagby). Old. Gold, 7st. Gib. (L. Morris). Pacific Slop;, 7st. (lib. (E. Mancon). Bagdad. 7st. 41b. (T/. Berrv). .Motuihi, 7st. 31b. (A. B»ed). 'I'ressida. 6st. 121b: (C. Reed). In this event the three-year-olds lpok liko playing a very prominent part. Motuihi. Crenides. and Lucid are all well in the market, and the best of them is Mire to tako a hand in the, finish. Kilrush, runner-up to Affectation nt Masterton, may be the absolute favourite. as he. galloped surprising! v well'yesterday morning. Ho tain will probably start in the. Wainui Handicap, and Maioha in the Shorts Handicap. If he has gone on the right way since the autumn,. Lucid should be one of the hardest to beat, while no fi>ult can bo found with the track work of Motuihi, Askari has contracted influenza. while Rieuse has broken down, and both will be missing from the Wel'f-sley Stakes field. The locally-owned Weary Willie mav be favourite, but there will be plenty of support for several of the other runners, including, the eond-look-mg Bestir, the Lowry-ownpd Right and Left, and' the Chokebore filly Moorfowl, also the unbeaten Saima, who is remarkably quick at finding his ieet. A 71b. penalty, for her win at Masterton will nrobaWv put E"'ewreath out of r.ouvt for the October Handicap, while the -''stance will trouble Nursint? Sister, and ■I'.e going will be against Kiigour. Sir Fanciful is in three races, but "ill probablv start, earlier in the day. Two likely sorts are ParoTan'ri and Swi'f-t Memory- The l.isl-'inined is a greatly iinprovfrl filly, and has won at her last two starts. Silver Link is lop weight in the Shorts Handicap. She has been galloping very well at headquarters, but. want of a race mav beat her. One of the favourites will be Ermine, wlm has been racing consistently of la'e. while Maioha will also be in Hie marM. but most support may lie carried by Tirritiyn. who is very niee]v weighted in the middle of the handicap. anil whose track work sinec arrivini'at headquarters has been of ft very high order. Great interest is being taken in tho (aivie at the Catholic Bazaar at the Town Hall for possession of tho two-year-old fijy donated by Mr. H. M'Manaway. The youngster has a. pedigree should appeal to all. She is by the imported
