WESTMORELAND OUT OF DOCK. "A big job successfully accomplished" wis a, general comment at tiie Otago dock, Port Chalmers, on Saturday. Tlio comment had reference to tho big steamer Westmoreland, and to the fact that the extensive repairs to her bottom were completed. .The walr;i' was being, admitted to the dock for the first time since July 26 last, when the repairing of the Westmoreland. y/M commenced. ' Since then over 50 big shell plates have been removed from her .. bottom, repaired, and replaced, while estensivo repairing and renewing of iron work inside tho shell hag been also carried out. , The work Imb been dono to the satisfaction of a "host" of inspectors representing various interests associated with shipping. A. fine bit of skill has also been displayed by'the docli staff in shifting round the keel blocki and shores to facilitate the repairs to the vessel. The weight of her was upwards of 12,000 tons. Consequently the avoid' auce of unduo strain at any particular point, when keel blocks were being moved about' to enable the boilermakcre to deal with damaged' keel plates, waß a. vital frfctor, no doubt, iu the dockmaßter's calculations. The repairing of the Westmoreland ia'said to be the biggest jut) of its kind dono in the Dominion, and it is also said that none of tho big ship' repairing jobs done at Port Chalmers has ever had to be done over again. The Westmoreland came out of dock on Monday.
