ROMAN SILVER ON THE HILLTOP
Two Scotch antiquaries, Dr. George Macdonnld and A. 0. Curie, recently dug into some ancient earthworks on the hilltop of Traprain Law, one of the spnr9 of the Lammermoor flange, twenty miles east of Edinburgh (.Scotland), and uncovered a largo number of Roman silver vessels—flagons, spoons, and cups—apparently tho loot from a plundered monastery. Traprain Law is part, of the estate of Mr. A. J. Balfour, the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affiars. The vwsela were in n, crushed condition and apparently intended for the melling pot. The theory is that the treasure was broujfht to Scotland I>y sea rovers. The plato was probably made in the fourth century. It bears Christian symbols-and somo of it shows evidence of Teutonic workmanship. A coin found with the silv.er indicated .the date.
