ORIENTAL BAY FORESHORE
— RESIDENTS AIR A GRIEVANCE. For some time past residents of Roseneath and Oriental Bay havo been very indignant at Hid practice of the City Council in making the beach a dumping ground for tlio street sweepings and sump refuse. The matter was brought to a head last night, when at a meeting of the Roseneath and Oriental Bay Municipal Association several speakers strongly condemned the council's action, and the following resolution was unanimously carried'"That this meeting enters a strong protest against tho action of the City Engineer's Department, despite continued'protests from the resident? in continuing to deposit on tho foreshore the street sweepings and sump refuse of the city, and that tho attention of the Health Department be drawn to the menace to the public health that now exists as a result of this practice, and that the Harbour Board's attention be drawn to the way in which the beach is being polluted and the lmilxtur filled lip as a result of tho foroshoro being used as a rubbish tip." It was mentioned that the foreshore at the end of the wall was alive with Tat 3. As manyas ten rats had been seen crossing the road at the same time. Furthermore, the filthy state of the bench made it a breeding ground for flies. Samples of tho refuse had been examined bv a well-known fly specialist, and they disclosed the fact "that unless the practice of the council wns immediately discontinued residents would be well advised at the approach of warm weather to keep their children from the beach.
