MASTERTON MEETING
NOBLEMAN WINS BIG RACE.
The Masterton Meeting was concluded on Saturday in fine weather. Tho' going was- again good and the attendance was large. The totalieator handled ,£24,663, making ,£48,202 ■ for the meeting, compared with <£38,992 last year.
Zeus was tho only scratching for tho Hack Hurdles, but Cyra broke down in the preliminary and was brought back to the birdcage. Whiro was at a very short price At the first fence he was clear-of the field, and Pervolo, Sonnino and, Tuticorn fell. Down the back the black gelding had a good lend, but across, tho bottom Sail Homo ran to him, and after jumping the last feneo together, Sail Home ran in an easy winner.' Princo Delaware was a poor third. The winner was ridden l>y A- M'Donald, who camo down specially to take t'ho- mount. All started in the Grandstand Hack Handicap, Galore and Kilgour being tho favourites. It was a rough ridden race and several horses got bad passages. Vascovia and Tonukoho were the first out, and they led to the half-mile, where Black Hill took charge. In the straight he was challenged by Sir Fanciful, but lie soon compounded. Kilgour and Galore then made their claims, but the leader held his own and won nicely. Galore was a lipigth away, and then camo Sir Fanciful. Tho winner generally, races well on the Opaki course, but ho regularly fails elsewhere. The bracketed pair (Torfreda and Murihiku) was favourite for the, Telephone Handicap. Ermine, on tho rails, was tho quickest to begin, but at. the ?nd of a furlong Murihiku had taken charge. Sho was first into the straight, and ridden right out beat Ermine by a head. Torfreda was a neck awav third, and then came Samarang. Ermine appeared a bit unlucky not to win. She finished • very well, and is improving daily. I For the Juvenile Handicap Askan and Birkie were withdrawn, and tho Wanftftnni winner Saima started a hot favourite. He drew the outside, and Kildee hegan with him. At the end of'a fnr- ' loiig the pair were clear of the field. The favourite then shot out and won qasilv, while ICildee had to bo ridden out to beat Ennea. Lucullan was fourth. The winner is very smnrt and should do well in the Wellesley Stakes. Red Ribbon was the favourite m tho Wa-ipipi Handicnn. for which nil the acceotors wpvg saddled up. Jlisinshoivi and Tressidn led down the back from Nohleman. At the half-mile t'>o field clo<=»d up. but Risineham was -=till clear the 1 siroiffht was enteral. Thpn I?ed put in a run on the nnt«id», and Nobleman got through on the rails. In a eood finish jNobleman won by a length from i Risinsjliam, who beat the favourite 1)y a length. Old Gold, was fourth., - Galore, who had started earlier in the dav. was the onlv withdrawal from the Raiiwav Faok Handicap. Lord Astolat was a good favourite, with Rose Wreath second choice. Pakarnka a fast pace into the straight, where Rose -Wreath joined him. The leader commanded inside the distance and Rose Wreath won eomfortabiv. while the favourite finished well, and beat Pakaraka. Midland was fourth. Rose Wreath was tri«d in behind in to-d-syv's r ace. and the tactics were successful. The form wns "ood. ns sh« beat Lord Astolat very eonfort"Nv.
