The Corinna, which recently completed ail extensive overhaul at Tort Chalmers, is a different vessel in Beveral ways, /n important improvement made from the point of view of the cargo workers is the installation of an electric lighMng plant. The machinery is housed in the engineroom, and the lights are tilted througnoui. the ship, including imißthead and . lunacies. 'ISvo clusters are provided lor each of the four hatchways. The comfort of the officers and crew as far as accommodation is concerned haß also received attention. and the result is stated to ,be very satisfactory. Four new rooms, nicely fitted, have been built on the rid 1 ridge deck for this accommodation of tho captain, the chief engineer, and the lirst tnd second officers. A new bridge has been built above these rooms, bo that the navigation officer is stationed on a level about Bft. higher than ipreviously. The purser's room and ollico are now separate in the port alleyway instead of in one room on tho starboard alleyway. Tho greasers have a room to themselves in tne starboard alleyway. The eleeping quarters of the crew have not been altered, but a distinct improvement has been mado by tho provision ol' two mess rooms, one for the firemen and one for the sailors. There are also three bathrooms fitted with hot and cold showers, one being for the officers aoid the others for tlio crew, who have change rooms, fitted with lockers, connected with theirs. Eresh water tanks are counccted with tho bathroom. Tho vessel's großs toimago has also been increased Jrom 1271 tonß to 1319 tons.
TRANSPORTS IK BALLAST. Tho cargo offering in the United Kingdom for Australia in apparently not nearly sufficient to illl tile available space 011 tne transports which are now carrying Australian troops home. The Bahia Castillo is 011 the way with 1500 tons o£ ballast. The Bawhara has 73 tons of cargo l'or Melbourne, 23i tons for Sydney, and 650 tons of ballast. The ]iarambuli, a vessel of about 10,000 tons capacity, lias two tons of cargo for Fremautlc, 13Ju tons for Melbourne, and 942 tons for Sydney. Tho Kauowna has 660 tonß of ballast, And tho Main 1050 tons of bullast. • The l'lassy, which left England on. September. 5, has 230 tons of cargo and .HOC tons oi ballast. All the vessels 011 the latest list issued by the Commonwealth Shipping Board havo a, comparatively small portion of their space occupied with cargo. NOTICE TO MARINERS. Since then 7970 vessels have passed through the canal bearing 29,662,971 lons of cargo. In spite of war conditions, or in somo respects bccause of them, tho traffic
through the Panama Canal has seen a steady, though at times fluctuating, increase. During September, 1915, the first full month of operation, E7 vessels bearing 322,038 tons of cargo paved through the waterway. In Juno last the number ivas 162 and the cargo 640,234 tons.
