NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES (From Our Special Correspondents.) WAIRARAPA At tho meeting of the directors of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society last night, over which Jlr. J. Calwell presided, a letter was received from a former drummajor, Mr. Hod M'Rne, complimenting the society 011 its progress in piping and juvenile dancing, 'l'lio following new members were elected:—Messrs. A\ r . B. Jlatheson, Ct. Lamb, E. D. Leach, and 11. E. Ji'Laren. The treasurer reported a credit balance of 9s. .id. Accounts amounting to .£36 14s. 2d. were passed fur payment. The first social gathering held under the auspices of the P.ukio Football Club took place in tile Town Hall, Featherston, on Thursday night. The event attracted a large attendance from all parts of the district, and was a pronounced success. HANAWATO Mr. J. H. Watt, of Palmerston North, who has been 011 a visit to America, is now on his way back to the Dominion by the Makura, which left Vancouver for Auckland on October 11. Mr. Leonard P. Lenry, of Palmerston North, who recently returned from the front, lias been admitted as a solicitor of tho ■ Supreme Court. The Judge congratulated Mr. Leary on having qualified as the result of studies undertaken in the intervals of nearly five years' service. Speaking at the meeting held for the purpose of resuscitating the local branch of the Sports Protection League at Palmerston North, Mr. W. L. Fitzherbert made a strong appeal for the fostering of sport in tho town and district. He said that he had been astonished to learn that in a town of the size and importance of Palmerston they could not obtain a secretary for the Mannwatu Cricket Association. With the exception of tho Pacing Club, tho Golf Club, and the Hockey Association, sport in tho town was 111 anything but a flourishing condition. Football and cricket had gouo right back, and it was quito time, that they organised and made some attempt to" put them on a sound footing. Football had been simply "rotten" during the past ten years. They 6hould help cricket by subscribing to get really good coaches. The present position was. owing to the apathy of tho public. They wanted to nut their sports 011 a. proper footing and'give more encouragement to tho voung pconle to join in them. Mr. P. C. Freelh has been appointed the representative of tho 'Wanganui Education Bonrd 011 tho Palmerston North High School 'Board, in placo of Mr. W. L. Barnicoat, who resigned the positions having left tho district. Since the opening of the angling season the weather has been anything but propitious for the disciples of Iznao .Walton. The Manawatu River has been too discoloured to be suitable for fly fishing. In spite of this, some fair baskets of fish, between lib. and 21b. in weight, have been secured, but no laree fish have yet been seen. The local Acclimatisation Society is taking tho necessary steps to see that tho rivers are well stocked. They havo previously turned out about 60,000 fry this season, and this week another 40,000 brown trout, frv were liberated in tho Manawatu River. Fifteen cans of yearlings wcro also turned out this week.
