RAILWAY FARES

Sir,—ln connection with tho request* that have been made in regard to thi? matter, I hope tho Minister of 'Railways will denl with tho question without undue delay. Families who have residences at Paekakariki are under great' expense at the present time; they did not complain during tho war period, realising that everyone was culled upon to niiiko sacrifices, but the time has arrived now for the Minister to act, «nd treat the people fairly by again reinstating thi. week-end excursion fares. In the case of Paekakariki, I would gO; further ana elh'ongly urgo that this station bs _ included in the suburban area, especially as all the trains, now running to l'limnierton (the present limit of the suburban area) run through to Paekakariki, and start from this station on the return journey. 'We hear a good deal about the housing problem just now, and any assistance that can be given to induce people to reside outside the cities should receive favourable consideration. Many people who have houses at Paekakariki would "let" them or live then; themselves if suburban rates were in force. The existing fares 'of Bs. 3d. first and 4s. 2d. second return are prohibitive to families ef moderate means. Trusting that a reduction will be mode at an early date.—l am, etc., VERB. SAP. • October 15, 1919.
