MORE WATER FROM WAINUI
Sir,—So the City Council is still contemplating the construction of another dam. I certainly thought the locality had been dammed enough. The lost dam was a source of considerable expense, after it was finished, on account of the leaks. No engineer of any standing would construct a dam for the main purpose, of a continuous and safe'"water supply, whero a stream or river was handy, and by tho construction of a tunnel a never-failing supply of infinitely superior water could be obtained. It is -well known that thero is more than ample water in tho Orongo-Orongo Biver to supply (en times the number of inhabitants of the city of Wellington and its surroundings, such supply being of the purest and at a greater pressure than Waimii. The cost of the necessary iunnel, even if a little more than the dam, which I very much doubt would bo the case, is as nothing as against purer water for all time without any more expense.
Supposing the authorities insist upon tho construction of' the proposed dam, and the population to be supplied increases, as it will do, when nortions of Karori, Miramar, Seatoun, and tho Island' Bay district are further .peopled. llow long would it be before "another dam was required?
The Wainui source of 6upply. even if the new dam is erected woiild not be B.ufficient, and besides tho dams must
in time get the bottom covered with all kinds of material, the decomposition of a lot of which does not tend to purify water. I ask the ratepayers to take steps to have the question of the new dam versus the Orongo-Urongo Stream properly considered, by the appointment of thsee or four well-known engineers to report,—l aiii, etc., NO HESITATION.
