A BOWLING DISPUTE
SOUTHLAND V. WELLINGTON. R.v TelegraDb.—l'ress Astociatlou. Invercargill, October IG. Tho objections raised by the executvo of the Wellington Bowling Centre to tho amount of tho prize money to bo allocated by tho Southland Centre for its New Year tournament were referred to by the president of the centre, Mr. S. Mac Donald, to-day. 110 stated that in his opinion the -. Wellington body had adopted; an allegether wrong attitude, 'l'ho Southland centre, ho said, had' forwarded its proposed programme to tho 'Bowling Council some timo prior to ita mooting in Auckland on August 14. Later, tho secretary of tho Dominion Council telegraphed to tho' secretory of tho local centre stating that permission had been granted, and that the necessary arrangements for the tournament could bo proceeded with. At the meeting of the council in Audkland referred to, the present oouncil was elected, and ho thought that it was nothing less than "cheeky" on tho 'part ot the' executive of Wellington Centre now to raise an objection, and likewise on the part of tho present council to pass a motion in direct opposition to the o'.d council. Having reoeived the necessary permission to increase • the amount-of Hie prizo money to ,£l2O, the. local centre ; had ail its arlv.ngements for tlio New Year tournament, and ns it had bcon pointed out, Southland was only acting'in harmony •with the decision of the old council.'. Tho Preference made by the executive of tho I Wellington Bowling Centre, that', the prizs would presumably be cash, was incorrect. Trophies only were too be awarded. The centre had also-reserved the light to alter or reduce tho prize money if there were fewer than 64 entries for the singles competitions, and fewer than 98 for the doubles. Theio seemed to be an inclination on th 6 'part of some of tho larger ceiitros to recognise? only Auckland, Wellington, Christehurch, and Dimedin. Naturally Southland wished tomake its .tournament a popular one; audio establish itself as a bowling centre of, importance. Weliingtoh could draw uponthe North and South Islands for competitors at its competitions, while Southland had no districts to rely upon unless some inducements were offered.-
