FOOTBALL TRAM TRAFFIC
SIDING AT THE ATHLETIC PAXIL Visitors to the Athletic Park on' recent Saturdays, who have had to be, content with a strap, and sometimes not that 011 the trams returning to town will be interested to learn tlmt tho Traniwnva Committee reported as follows to the City Council on Thursday.
"That they have considered the question of the congestion of tram traSic which takes place at the Athletic Park after football matches. They have instructed the tramways malinger to approach the Athletic Park Company, with a view to obtaining permission to construct a tramway siding in the hollow at. the southern end of the Park.
"By levelling up this cad of the Park property, which is not utilised at present. thero would bo amnio room for a doublo track siding capnblo of holding twelve care.
"If this proposal could bo given effect to the cars could bo loaded iip in the Park grounds, and consequently this would tend to relievo the.congestion at the. Park gates."
Iti connection with the abovo a letter waa received by the council, notifying the intention of the Wellington Rugby Football Iniion to erect a, new grandstand nt the Athlctic Pp.rk before next football season.
Speaking to the report, tho Mayor said that there were two suggestions before the committee—one to run the cars into Waripori Street, and the second 0110 was for the Athletic Park Companv to allow the lower dip of the Park to be used as a siding, when there would lie room to park a dozen care, as against eitrht in thn street. He moved the adoption of the report.
Councillor T>. M'Konzio moved that the renort be held over until Mr. Morton returned in ordor to get a prnner report about the whole business. The suggestion was simply tinkering with the matter. and thn whole question of the traffic nt Hie Park should bo thormi<rlily gone into. He stxike of the proposal to erect a new grnndstnrd which would semi to still further induce the nublic to visit the Park. Ho drew attention to tho conirestion which took place after every b'iir match at the Park. Officials had told him that the intention wos to cut th.9 existing grandstand in half, and place the sections north find south,, which would mean that, the land proposed to be utilised for a, siding would be needed for a grandstand. . The renort was adopted.
