$ POLICE CASES. John Joseph Smith, a seaman ou the steamer Tainui, was charged beforo Mr. W. G. J.iiddell, S.M., at tho .Magistrate's Court yesterday with absenting himself without leave, using obscene languago, and of assaulting the second engineer, Alfred Cooper. On tho first charge Smith was ordered to forfeit two days' nay, and for using bad language he was fined On tho charge of assault, which was not ono of great violence, tho accused was lined 20s. Ho was also ordered to pay costs £1 15s. Drink was the causo of tho trouble which culminated in the arrest of William John Taylor 011 Wednesday afternoon. Prior to leaving his homo Taylor assaulted his wife, and then created quite n lot of trouble on a tramcar. He was ejected for drunkenness, and was then arrested by Constable li. Henry. Taylor resisted violently, and it took a lone timo to get him to the lock-up. Mr. E. Page, S.M., fined accused ,C 5 for assaulting his wife, JSI for resisting arrest, and ss. for drunkenness. . The action of Arthur Pago in striking Prank Loftus resulted in his being charged with assault. Evidenco was given to tho effect that both men were somewhat under the influence of liquor, and that Page had struck loftus in the mouth without any provocation. Pago was fined .£lO, in default twenty-one days' imprisonment. For insobriety William Albert Cosgrovo was fined 155., and ivas also made the subject of a prohibition order. Thomas Stephen Davies wes fined £2, and one first offender was fined 104. POSSESSION OF TENEMENTS. The application of W. Meale, liotelkeoper, Greymouth, for an order for possession of promises at, Northland, tenanted by Percy Wilson, was not allowed, 011 the ground that Mealo was not now the owner of the property, it having been disposed of to' a third party. The defendant was allowed J2l is. costs. Mr. J. Scott appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. G. G. Watson for the defendant. Mrs. Jnne Dunphy was ordered to give up possession of a dwelling to Henry Lake bv November 14. Mr. G. G. Watson appeared for tho plaintiff and Mr. O. W. Tanner for tho defendant. POSSESSION OF A PIANO. 6. B. Duffin was ordered' to ooliyer up possession of a piano to the British Piano Co.. Ltd., by October 25, and pay £7 lis. costs. In the event of the piano not being handed over judgment would be for plaintiff company for £l2i. JUDGMENT ISY DEFAULT. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., gave judgment for plaintiff by default iu tlio following undefended cases:—Field and Luckie v. W. 11. Sanson, 25., costs £1 6s. Cd.; Osmond and Son (N.Z.), Ltd., v. G. E. Stewart, ill 18s., costs 55.; Lazarus Wolfe Balkind v. James O'Malley and Agnes Mabel O'Malley, JJ22 10s., costs .£3 35.; Spencer George Radford v. James Stevenson, .£29 3s. Gd., costs 135., 6d.; George Ernest Baker v. Laurio Temperton, Xi Cs. 10d., costs 10s.; Townsend and Paul, Ltd., v. Gabriel and Paul, .£ls lis., costs iil 10s. fid.; Tripe and Ellis v. W. James, £2 9s. Cd., costs 139. JUDGMENT SUMMONS. Boy Cook was ordered to pay G. Stuart Garland the sum of JEB '.is. Od. bv November 3, in default seven days' imprisonment. A judgment appeared in the civil list 011 Wednesday morning against H. J. Stagpoolo for A. Anderson. Tlio Dominion Mercantile Agency, Ltd., state that the judgment was entered up in the court in error, the account having been settled tho day previous.
