NAVAL SCHOOL
TRAINING SHIP FOR BOYS TO BE BASED IN WELLINGTON. The training of boys for the Navy is one of the matters dealt with by Lord Jcllicoe in Ins report on naval defence, "in order to provide accommodation for the traijiiuy of bays and stuKers oil entry," says the report, "it is recommended that 11.M.5. Philomel should bo fitted out as a stationary training establishment, accomniodat.on being provided lor tne following, in addition to the instructional and ship's stuit—vi?.., iuo to 121) boys, 50 stokers. l''or purposes of training, tue Philomel shoilid be provided w.tii an armament comprising ono Bin. B.L. gun Mark VII. or later, one din. Q.F. [[tin, Murk IV. or V., two 12-pdr. y.F. guns. Two of the guns to be lilted witn laying teachers, atiu n (iin., it 4iii., and a 12-pdr. loader to be provided. One modern type searchlight also to ba installed. At a later period it may be desirable to move her to Queen Charlotte Sound or Pelortts Sound, where the climate and surroundings are more suitable. Whilst the ship is at Wellington she should be moored in a position which would keep the boys under training clear of the city, whilst affording opportunities for recreation. A ground should be obtained hear the ship. It may be possible to find a suitable place m Evans Bay or off Petono."
