9 The fortnightly meeting of-the Society for the. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was lipid last evening. The. president, Mr. F. Meadowcrofi. occupied the cliaii. A letter was received from Mr. F. W. Rowley, of tho Labour Department, with reference to the allcjied cruelty to eheep that takes place in ehods at shearing tiniw. wherein he said that ho had directed hisi inspectors to combine with ; their othor duties tho proper handling of the shtep when being shorn and suggesting that the society communicate with other societies on the flume matter. The inspector's " report dealt with four cases of lamo horses, ono with sores, two destroyed, ono in poor condition, one case of overloading, one case of cruelty to cats. Subscriptions received amounted to .£5 18s., including M Is. from the Union Steam Ship Co., £\ from "lioyer of Animals," and 10s. 6d. from pupils of Hikitaki school.
