CLERGYMEN'S STIPENDS

RESOLUTION OF ANGLICAN SYNOD. ' By Telegraph-Press Association. Napier, October 14. At the Anglican Synod, the finding of a committee set up to deal with tho question of tho stipends of the clergy [was as follows:—"That the scale uf stipends in tho majority of cases now paid is wholly insufficient for tlie services rendered, aud that they are quite inadequate for the support of the clergy. That the stipends paid lo tho -Maori clergy are so low as hardly to amount to a payment at all. It is impossible for these men to live without supplementing their incomes l;y farming or other pursuits." In his address, BisViop Sedgwick said:"Thcre is :t scarcity of clergy throughout the province. We bewail the laet that so few of our young i..en are offering themselves lor holy Orders. Cannot one of the reasons !.e found here? W'hila no one with a sense of his vocation would consider for one moment '»"lmt he could n.r.ke out. of the ministry, he might rcasonablv hesitate to enter a. profession iu which'it would bo impossible adequately to support n wife urn: bring up a lamily. The larger portion of tho stipends remain wholly' inadequate." ' Air." C. A. de Liiiitonr moved:—"That the report lie forthwith taken into consideration and be referred to all parishes i.i the diocese for immediate remedial action; that tho case of the inadeqnalo payment of the Maori clergy should bo rectified; and the Synod requests tho Bishop to refer the matter tor redress to the Mission Board, or lo take such other steps in the matter ts he shall deem expedient." The motion was carried unanimously.
