• MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Petone Borough Council met last even'Uig, tlio Mayor, Mr. J. W. M'Bwan, presiding. Councillors C. P. Brocklcbfiiik, J. Clmrchouee, J. Kyle, W. Hay, A. Anderson, D. Bedingfield, G. Coolc, and E. Tovey wero aCso present. The application of tho Hutt Valley fire brigades for the use of tlio ltocroabon Ground on Labour Day for the purpose of lidding a competition, was granted. After some discussion, it was decided not to take any action in regard to tlio Wiliest from tlio Wailn Borough Council for support for the introduction of legislation this session prohibiting the export of timber until the local markets are supplied. Councillors expressed the opinion that the request, of the Waihi Council did not go far enough. It was decided to request Mr. T. M. AVilford, M.l\, to inquire into the City Milk Biill,'and to oppose- those, clauses that would be detrimental to the borough. Some discussion took place on the application of the Education Department that the Boys' Institute secboinn the borough bo handed over to the Education Board, for school purposes. The Major intimated that rates were due to on the section amounting to SW, and in order to secure payment it was propped to institute court proceedings, ilia fcrough clerk stated that there wast. no deed of 'trust in respect of tho which was vested m tho lato Mcfisrs. J G. Castle and K. Mothes and the Kev. Thompson, and an endeavour nig .made to have the section vested in tho council. Further action was postponed until more particulars were obtained. The Borough Engineer s report, whtch, \>as adopted, stated that tho routine work was being Pr^^'V 1, 3J? a slip on the Koro-Itoro Eoad,.the engineer stated that lie had examined tho road carefully and found that. the tfip wns duo to a road culvert being put through to spill on to a part of the slope which isnaturnjly loose. He had taken steps to have this diverted, and that no danger need be anticipated. Tho matter of pnvment ( f°r ® hoises was referred to the Works Com mittee for consideration. Tlio Enmrt also referred to the development of the sewerage system and the proposed extension to Collins Street. During the pnet month seven new gas meters installed. In regard to the department, eight house services had been competed, and twelve house drains1d Building permits issued for the month totalled s'x, and the vaaio amounted to JQ1153.
