AUTOMOBILE CLUB

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The committee of the Wellington Automobile Club met last week,-Dr. C. Prendergast Knight presiding. There were also present Messrs. J. J. Williamson, C. M. Banks, H. Lloyd, W. Pryor, L. R. Partridge,' W. Stuart Wilson, and H. J. Stott (secretary). Mr. C. Gray, Pahautanui, attended the meeting and showed the committee a plan produced by the Government Engi-. neer showing the proposed deviation of tho railway around the coast and the proposed new road via Pukerua. It was decided to 1 ask Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., to press for the road scheme to bo started immediately, in the event of the proposed railway , deviation not being started within a reasonable time. The committee thanked Mr. Gray for the trouble and time he had given this matter in the interests of the motor club. Correspondence was read and received from tho Nelson Automobile Association stating that in reply to the club's letter, their association would support the idea of half-yearly union meetings but not at Auckland, Dunedin and Napier, as it would not bo convenient for Nelson delegates to attend. A letter from the secretary of the New; Zealand Automobile Union (Mr. W. Beau-champ-Platts) was received, stating that the union executive committee, in reply to the club's suggestion, had decided, to express to the Gotid Roads Association tho necessity for extending 1 its activities and at tho samo time to recommend all the affiliated associations to render, what assistnnco thby could in the formation of branches. ,K p Tho secretary submitted to the meeting the audited balance-sheet, also the report for'the year ending Augusti 31, 1919. These were adopted. Tho date of tho annual general meeting of members- was left to the sub-committeo to ; decide and to bring forward any notico of motion that may be necessary,

Mr. W. Pryor and Mr. M. Book wo elected to act. on the 'sub-committee set up for the purpose of increasing the membership of the club. . Twenty-seven new members. were elected. , . The question of outstanding subscrip. tions wan discussed, and it was decided to inform such members that unless the amount was paid within seven days from date of application, legal proceedings would bo taken forthwith to obtain recovery; also, to point out that the club had arrived at a state where a taer income was absolutely essential in order to carry out the new programme of the committee. , A report of the meeting of the Antonio, bilo TTnion held on September 30 was received. The proposed Dominion mutual insurtmco schema was received from th& New Zealand Automobile Union. It was decided to inform the union that the committee approved of such a scheme, and that they were in fnvour of an annual premium income scheme as aeainst tha deposit system proposed by Mr. Johnston, of tlio Cbristohurch Automobile Association. , , - The notes on the proposed scheme 01 registration of motors were received from the secretary of the New Zealand Automobile Union, and it was decided to leavo tho whole matter in the hands of the delegates appointed by the committee to the union monthly meetings. Tho borrowing of motor-cars, generally known as "joy-Tiding," was discussed, and it was stated that legislation had been brought down which would probably pass into law making the penalty for such a.n offence .£lO. Tho secretary was directed to communicate with, the secretary of the Now Zenlftnd Automobile Union informing him that the committco was of tho opinion that this amount was not sufficient, and that the maximum penalty should be JJlflO. The conglomeration of traffic caused by stationary trams at Lnmbton Station, also at a point opposite Grey Street, in Customhouse Quay, was discussed, and it was decided' that Dr. Prcmlergnst Knight, Messrs, 11. Lloyd and C. M. Banks should interview the acting-man-ager of tho tramways department to point out tho dangor attaching to the present system.
