WELLINGTON V. WANGANUI

BROWN SHIELD MATCH

Ideal weather conditions prevailed for flic contest between Wellington and WaiiKanui for the Brown Shield. . Y/ellincrton wrested the shield from Canterbury a few weeks ago, and by beating AVangnuui by 6 goals to nil, established their claim in soccer supremacy for 1919. Fully two thousand spectators witnessed the giunc at Athletic Park. Wangunui, whileJkeen to a' degree, were outclassed in, every department. of the game, the only player on their side calling for distinction being Hyder (in goal), who'saved his side from total eclipse. Wellington, winning the toss,'kicked off with the sun behina them, and early gained tile advantage, J. Smith sending in a nice centre,, and Ilealey conceding a corner, which proved- fruitless. , M'Girr, manoeuvring for position, let fly witli a left-foot drive, which was excellently saved by Hyder. Beckett, on .the- Wanßttimi left, niade good progress l , Jl'Artliur (Institute) relieving the pressure; Wellington forwards returned to the attack. where Ballard, AVe'lington's best opportunist, almost succeeded, Hyder saving at the expense* of a corner. Lowe next had a good run, but Thompson prevented him from crossing,, thus robbing Wapganui of a likely chance. K. Smith got going, and. sent in a lovely centre, which Porter 'just lieiided over. K. Smith repeated his run on the left, for-" ter making no mistake this time. Wellington. 1; "Wanganui, 0. The local halves were_ almost impassable, and when the Wanganui forwards did' evade them Jt'Arthur . (Thistle) , and 801 l had little trouble in relieving tho pressure. M'Girr was in great form, and was always on the ball. On one he placed nicaly to Porter, who dodged several opponents and shot, Hyder saving splendidly. It was a case of the Wellington forwards against Hyder. Ballard llext had a shot at goal, but his elevation, was too high, Troth did likewise immediately after from one of "Jimmy" Smith's centres. During a bombardment of the Wanganui goal one of the defenders handled in the penalty area, and M'Girr took the resultant kick:. the ball struck the crossbar and rebounded back to him, and as he played the ball a second time a free-kick relieved the pressure for Wanganui. The visitors made a determined onslaught oil the local goal, but their effort was shortlived, as M'Arthur (Institute) let Trothawav. the latter passing to Ballard, who dashed in and scored Wellington's second goal. Wellington, 2; Wanganui, 0. Soon after Ballard forced a corner. IC. Smith placed tho ball beautifully under tho crossbar, where M'Girr headed' through. Wellington, 3; Wangamii, 0. The local team kept up the pressure, K. Smith. J. Smith, and : Porter all having unsuccessful tries at goal, but no further scoring resulted up/to the call of half-time. The second half opened with a splendid run by Troth, who beat several opponents. and finished up by weakly shooting past. J. Smith next sent in an ideal centre, Porter sending over tho bar. Porter again had a shot at goal, and Hyder kicked clear, but J. Smith socured. and sent the ball into tho net before the former had tiiuu to recover. Wellington, 4; Wanganui, 0. The local team, with a comfortable lead, now settled down to an c-xhibit-ion of tricky work. Ballard and Porter wore star artists in this respcct. The halves and forwards indulged in passing and repassing, with occasional ilashshots at Boal. Wanganui defence hiul a gruelling time, and it was only now and, again their fonvard.4 would come away with a spasmodic rush. M'Girr tested Ryder with a low grounder, the latter clearing in splendid style. J. Smith, from halfway, made a brilliant run, beating opponent after ''opponent, and passing to Ports-r. who, from close in, beat Hyder. Wellington, 5; Wanganui, 0. Tho Wanganui forwards tried hard to make headway, but could make little imprcs? sibn on tlie local halves,"who placcd-tho-hall to their forwards to perfection. Ballard, who was continually in the limelight, scored Wellington's final goal, after a good- -bit of plav. ■ Wellington, ,G; Wanganui, 0. Shortly after, Belliamie 'handled tho ball for the first time during the game, which is an eloquent testimony to the good defensive ■■work of Bell and M'Arthur (Thistle). Wanganui again approached Eelhamie, where Bell, in clearing, handled, a pen-alt.v-kick onsuing. Beckett took the kick,'and drove tho ball straight at Belhaniie. who cleared in splendid style. The game finished shortly afterwards, where tho ball had been most of the game—in Wanganui's half of the. field. Wamtanui's best player was undoubtedly Hyder, _ who saved his sido from a much heavier defeat. - Murray waA their best back, but their halves were very weak: and Tantrum was their best forward. . On Wellington's side Belhamie was a ■spectator. Hell and M'Ar'kur (Thistle) were an ideal pair, a good understanding existing between them. The local halves bottled up the visiting forwards. M'Girr was tho best half on the field, while M'Arthur' and Thompson were both good, arid performed with credit for their first senior representative match. Ballard and Porter were great, displaying excellent footwork, while J. Smith and IC. Smith performed well on the wing, aud Troth, in centre, completed a formidable quintette Mr. Dawso.n refereed the game. ' .
