NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES (From 'Our Special Correspondents.) WAIRARAPA Another Farmers' Union social and dance was held in- tho' Martinborough Town Ilall on Thursday evening, over GOO people being- present 1 , from all parts of the district. The hall' had been prettily decorated, under the supervision ,of Mrs. Henry M'Master, and the gathering was most successful from every point of view. Miss Daisy M'Lellan gave an exhibition of Highland dancing, and her small sister, Ellen, .gave a song. Others who contributed items wjre Mrs. Morton, Master Winston M'Carthy, and Messrs. Morton and Daysh. During the evening Messrs. T. L. Haycock and A. M'Leotl addressed the gathering on Farmers' Union matters. Mr. A. K. Hansen, of Bideford, has sold his freehold property of 4-« i acres at. Wailioke Valley to Mr. J. Savage, Masterton. The sum of Si 100 has been giveq by a resident oi' Jtnuriceville West to go' towards a fund to provide a concrete swimming bath at the local school. It was recently stated that, the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company had decided to erect dwellings for its employees at tlio AVaingawa Freezing Works. Preparations are now well in band for tho erection of six concrete houses, containing five rooms and all conveniences. The labour will be' supplied by the works employees. The cost of each .house will be .between d'dOO and „£ffl!o. During a discussion on the xedueation report at the meeting of the Ma-sterton Trust Lands Trust Mr. W. Grundy mentioned the case of a female student who had been receiving a uni- ' vbrsity grant for the past six years. Sho was still attending "terms," not having succeeded in passing the professorial examination usually held after the first year's terms, the passing of which entitled the student to sit for a degree. The Trust decided that this and other cases of a like nature needed reviewing. ' Mr. C. Danahey, a candidate for tho Wairarapa seat at the general election, addressed a public meeting in Masterton on Saturday night. He announced himself as independent of existing parties. and criticised the proposals of Sir Joseph Ward in regard to the purchase of the Bank of New Zealand and-,other matters. He was accCrded a vote of thanks, A case of cerebrospinal meningitis has been admitted to the Masterton Hospital from the Lower Valley. Mr. James Gillespie has been appointed secretary of the Masterton Competitions Society. At tho monthly meeting of tho Featherston County Council it was decided to voto tho chairman (Councillor A. D. M'Leod), an honorarium of J!SO per annum. In addition to having carried out work at a cost of .£SO, tlm Featherston County Council has voted JSC to the Ahiakouka River Board' towards river protective works, and Ji3fl is to be contributed from tho Greytown Riding fund.
MANAWATU
Tlio Manawatu Cricket Council met on Thursday night and arranged to open the season on Saturday, October 18. Five senior and four junior clubs have entered for tho competitions, and it was decided to accept further entries up to October 20. It was decided to adopt tho eight-ball over in cup matches, and to adopt one-day matches. ■ . At a meeting of the Kennel Club on Thursday evening to make filial arrangements in connection with the show to be held at the A. and I'. Exhibition early in November, it was re[xirted that entries were coming forward freely from Auckland, -Wanganni, Taranaki, and Hawke's Bay, as well as from the Manawatu district. Judges wcro appointed as follow:—All terriers, W. F. Durward (Palmerston North); bulldogs, C. E. Cults (Wellington); all other breeds, S. Johnston, A .general meeting of tho Palmerston North branch of the .Society of Account- ( ants was held on Thursday evening. It was resolved to donate prizes of a guinea each to the technical schools at Palmerston North, AVanganui, Feilding, and Marton for papers on book-keeping./ It was announced that accountancy students who had joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force with unfinished examination work had been granted special consideration with regard to the preliminary examination of tho society, and that Mr. Davis was prepared to Rivo every assistance and advice,- to _ those wishing to complete the. examination. It was decided to form' n students' society, and it. is hoped to have it in operation early next year, when a series of lectures is promised by prominent accountants and solicitors. When the College Street School Committee were discussing the necessity for up-to-dato residences being provided for school teachers, the headmaster related an incident that occurred in the Wellington district, when a lady teacher who'applied for a bath to bo provided at tho teacher's residence was politely informed "that the board did not supply baths for single ladies." Mr. N. 11. Mackie, Government Valuer for Manawatu and other districts for several years past, has been appointed to succeed Mr. J. M. Wilson, District Valuer, Palmerston. Sir. Archibald Ingram, a very old settler in tho Eangitikei district, died on Tuesday, aged 7G. ' Local subscription." to the Victory Loan through, the banks totalled .437,850; through brokers, ,£I3,OfVI. Post Office officials decline to state the amount received.
