A WAR INCIDENT

Sir,—Amidst the somewhat sickening 'spectacle of the New Zealand politicians' offers and baits to c?tch the returned soldier's vote next election, I wou'id like to mention an incident of another character of the disinterested service of ths battlefield. On October 12, 1917, the New Zealand Division wore subjected to a terrible ordeal, especially the N.Z.R.8., in tho attack on J3ellvue Spur, llio mud was terrible, and unless a man was •.vaOking carefully (if a casualty) lie just, died in the anire. An English regiment who were out for a scanty rest sent 4GO men to help get the New Zealand wounded out. Tlio regiment was the Duke of Wellington's. Considering that thc-o brave Tommies were in the tlr.ck of it for months, and that it took 10 hours and eight men to get a wounded man back to the dressing station, you will faintly understand what a eelf-sacntio in» effort these worn out Tommies gave to"us. And they went bark into he lino immediately after to their spell, with practically no rest. I thought I umJ.d mention this, as I have never heard of this incident being known in New Zealand. J served in the 3rd Colonel Winter-Evans (who was killed that day), and can testify from being in the ranks to tho above facts—l am, etc,, LOUIS E. DEVENTNER, 18,975.
